New Delhi, March 24 (IANS) The Delhi High Court Thursday issued notice to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on the bail plea of Shekhar Deorukhkar, an aide of former Commonwealth Games Organising Committee chief Suresh Kalmadi, in jail for alleged financial misconduct during the preparations for the mega event.
Justice Ajit Bharihoke asked the probe agency to respond to the bail application of the accused on April 6, the next date of hearing.
Earlier, in the first week of March, CBI special judge O.P. Saini had rejected Deorukhkar's bail saying there was "incriminating evidence" against him.
Deorukhkar was arrested Feb 11 from Pune and was sent to CBI remand a day later for five days. His remand was then extended by two more days.
Counsel for Deorukhkar said: "The CBI has not recovered any evidence against him, they have almost completed their interrogation. Bail should be granted as he has to look after his old parents. His wife and children are also suffering a lot."
The CBI has contended before the court that Deorukhkar and V.K. Verma, the director general of of the Organising Committee at that time, caused huge loss to the exchequer by awarding contracts to select companies at exorbitant rates.
His counsel also said that whenever required, Deorukhkar will join the CBI's investigation.
The games, which were held in New Delhi Oct 3-14, 2010, have been marred by allegations of financial irregularities and corruption.
