BJP's Two House Leaders in Race With Each Other: Congress

New Delhi, March 24 (IANS) In a scathing attack on the BJP, the Congress Thursday accused the party's leaders of opposition in the two houses of being in a race with each other to become "claimant for a higher post", which led the party to ignore issues concerning the common man during the budget session.

Without naming either Sushma Swaraj, who is Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha and Arun Jaitley, who is Leader of Opposition in the Rajya Sabha, Congress spokesperson Abhishek Singhvi said that the two Bharatiya Janata Party leaders were in race with each other.

"They are in a race with each other and seeking to score points. Each wants to outperform the other... and become the claimant for a higher post," Singhvi said.

He alleged the BJP was indulging in individual-based politics and had not focused on issues concerning the common man during the budget session of parliament.

Singhvi said the main opposition party had hardly talked about the plight of Indians stranded in countries such as Tunisia and Egypt or the situation arising out of the earthquake and tsunami in Japan, and had focused on WikiLeaks expose about the 2008 trust vote.

"They are displaying the politics of frustration... They attempted to short circuit the mandate of five years of UPA (United Progressive Alliance)," he said, referring to the cash-for-votes controversy.

The spokesperson said the debate on Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's remarks on the cash-for-votes controversy had shown the BJP "in poor and shoddy light."

"They (BJP) were trying to unseat the government by undemocratic means. Sellers were trying to sell and searching for buyers. They forgot the difference between a legitimate sting and entrapment," Singhvi said.

He accused the BJP of being irresponsible and not focusing on real issues.
