Japan Quake Toll Stands at 10,151, over 17,000 Missing


Tokyo, March 26 (IANS) The catastrophic earthquake and tsunami that struck Japan's east coast March 11 have left 10,151 people dead, and at least 17,053 were still unaccounted for till Saturday, Xinhua reported citing the National Police Agency.

The magnitude-9 earthquake hit the Pacific coastal areas of northeast Japan, triggering an enormous tsunami that led to explosions at the Fukushima nuclear power plant.

The operator of the stricken power plant started injecting fresh water Saturday into an overheating reactor.

The Tokyo Electric Power Co. started pumping water into reactor No.2 as workers tried to restore light and power to the control room in efforts to get the reactor's cooling system working again.
