Mangalore, Mar 26: Known for his entrepreneurial ventures in the field of education and for popularizing art, culture and literature, Dr M Mohan Alva, chairman of Alva’s Education Foundation had a new experience as he tried his hands on the canvas to inaugurate 'Hejjegalu' painting exhibition by Vrinda Bekal at Prasad Art Gallery here on Saturday March 26.

Eminent senior artist Ganesh Somayaji assisted Alva in completing the painting to inaugurate the event in a novel and creative manner.

Speaking after inaugurating the three-day exhibition, Alva stressed the need for people to recognize talents right from childhood and nurture the same as they grow. He regretted that many a talent is lost as a child grows due to changing priorities. Visual art was among the greatest of forms of expression and there was a need to encourage artists who have pursued their passion for art despite personal and professional challenges, he said.

Presiding over the function, Ganesh Somayaji placed on record the enormous contribution made by Alva’s Foundation in encouraging art and culture and complemented Alva for successfully initiating an art school in Moodabidri.

Hejjegalu is the maiden one-person exhibition of Vrinda Bekal who is presently based in Goa. Most of her paintings depict different facets of womanhood.

Basically hailing from the city, Vrinda Bekal is a aluminus of Ganapathy High School and St Aloysius College. Despite being a computer science graduate, the world of art has always been her first calling. She attended classes at Prasad Art Gallery and learned painting under the tutelage of Sri Ganesh Somayyaji .

After her marriage to a naval officer she had to relocate to various places in India where her husband was transferred, but she still had the craving to engage in her passion for painting. She had her first group exhibition by the naval wives welfare association at Kala Academy, Panaji.

The exhibition is open for general public throughout Sunday March 27.
