BJP Used Religion as Opportunistic Tool: Congress

New Delhi, Mar 27 (IANS): Attacking Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Arun Jaitley over his denial of the comments he allegedly made on the party's stand on Hindu nationalism, the Congress Sunday said it was time the BJP admitted that it had used religion as an "opportunistic tool".

"We are surprised by Arun Jaitley regarding the WikiLeaks expose... Nobody is surprised by the leaks. It is known to everybody in the country that BJP always used religion for political gains," Congress spokesman Shakeel Ahmed told IANS.

He said that the main opposition party, which had disrupted parliament's proceedings over the WikiLeaks expose relating to the cash-for-votes controversy, was now denying the contents of the leaks of US diplomatic cables.

"The negation has not served any purpose...Time has come for Jaitley and his party to accept openly that they have used religion as an opportunistic tool," Ahmed said.

He was referring to a leaked US diplomatic cable of May 2005 which gives a purported account of a conversation between Jaitley and a US embassy official in New Delhi.

According to the leaked cable, Jaitley said that Hindu nationalism was an opportunistic issue for the party and something that helped it to garner votes.

Jaitley Saturday said that use of word "opportunistic" in reference to nationalism or Hindu nationalism was neither his view nor his language and could be the diplomat's own language.

WikiLeaks had also leaked a 2005 cable about Prime Minister Manmohan Singh purportedly telling BJP leader Jaswant Singh that he cannot rely on anyone in the United Progressive Alliance for advice except P. Chidambaram, who was then the finance minister and is now the home minister.

Referring to this, the Congress spokesman said that the party has long maintained that the "cables are unverified and unverifiable."

Ahmed, who is the party in-charge of poll-bound West Bengal, gave a similar reply to a question about the assessment in a leaked cable that the hopes of the Congress party had shifted to Priyanka Gandhi Vadra after party leader Rahul Gandhi's alleged gaffes in 2007.

"The Congress stand has been that the cables are unverified and unverifiable. It is the BJP which has treated them as gospel truth," Ahmed said.

Communications Minister Kapil Sibal also attacked Jaitley over his denial and said the BJP leader should seek apology from the people.

"This is very, very serious. This means that a political party (BJP) is using Hindutva as an opportunistic issue. Because of this opportunism thousands lost their lives," Sibal told reporters here Sunday, referring to the "rath yatra" of then BJP president L.K. Advani.

He said the BJP should explain what is its real ideology.

"This means (opposition to) Article 370 and (demand for) Uniform Civil Code are also opportunistic," he said.

"The Babri masjid issue was also opportunism to mislead the people," he said.

"The Congress has been saying for years that the BJP is misleading the people. Even its ideology is such that they say something in front of the people and something behind their backs," Sibal added.

Gireesh shetty, how long you defend the opportunistic, brasta, jaathia BJP?Don't justify all the follys of the BJP.Be realistic and be matured.BJP divided our great coutry on the basis of religion for it's vested interest. Now can't you all see top BJP leaders wandering in Banagalore only ! Why?Every time whenever a corruption charge crops up against your CM,Pradhan,Jaitly,Rajnath,Naidu........... makes bee line and goes back with ......!Now a days Yeddy seems to be CM of Delhi rather than of Karanataka as most of the times he frequents Delhi to get reprive and to continue in CM's office by hook or crook.

Dear Lancelot Tauro. Before thinking about BJP splitting just see what happend in DK a week back. A bunch of so called congressmen joined BJP. Bangarappa who defected to JDS told in udupi other day that Karnataka congress is sinking ship. To this day JDS is acting as major opposition pulling Yeddi's Chaddi than the Congress.About BJP splitting its going on since the day YEDDI formed his chaddi Govt, but somehow they manage to pull it off by doing some patch work.Today the Congress situation is like AATAKUNTU,LEKKAKILLA. Therfore i guess you should be more worried about Congress splitting than BJP.

Secondly Mr Abdul Aziz...Never did I say Mr Shakeel was wrong. I openly tell you YES..BJP is using Hindutva card. Even I am not a BJP fan nor anyparty. I would prefer to cheer for a good candidate irrespective of any party. I have a little softcorner towards BJP only because of Atal Bihari Vajpaye, not for todays Chaddi gang. Unfortunetely BJP doesent have a leading man in center anymore with the Calibre of Shri ABV. Thats why they are doign such pathetic poitics than using1 opportunity the people of Karnataka gave them. Whats the use of such a high command which dares to take stand against its own CM of a state ?.
Sayign this My point was and I still mean it hat BJP learnt to play religion polotics after seeing Congress.Today its because Hidhus Vote wisely thats why Congress is in Power, unlike any community who blindly vote for Congress irrespective of candidiate. Admit it sir.

India is divided in to many states, religion ,caste and burning issue odf reservation. Talk anything people are ready to work in Govt dept., since it is lucrative and without investment. People opened their eyes and they see bright future in Govt jobs.
the reservation caste wise taking shape. 1st st sc`s followed by meena`s Gujjars OBCs and in that many divisions of OBCs and now the latest jats. and there will not be any end to that.
After some time every body afiliated to the cast will choke economic activity of Govt of India and will suffer immencely. To avoid that Govt must think of stopping this reservation and give reservation to the deserving economic backward people so that rich and famous will not corner the real purpose of reservation.
or else the rich and famous bribe as much as possible to fet the covetted post for development of corruption.e

Can any party win if they run behind the minorities. Hence what the Congress did for the last 50 years is good, because they protected the minorities which is not opportunistic. The BJP should realise that they have been exposed and now they will be reduced to a regonal party like the CPI which they already are with only 100 MPS from the total 540

Just wantd to answer Mr. Gireesh Shetty, let me clarify though I am not a Congress supporter, neither a BJP approver, so let me tell you one thing, you missed a point here. What Shakeel Ahmed said is that, if BJP can attack Govt over money issue based on Wikileaks, why don't the same BJP apologise to the nation about the same Wikileaks revelation about Arun Jaitleys remark on religeous opportunism.
No doubt you won't question Mr Jaitley, because he says he never said what Wikileaks says about him.
I think we all know BJP used Hindutva to get votes and in the process created hatred among two communities, thereby causing innocent lives. I agree Congress played caste politics, but to a lower scale.
All politicians are opportunists, they all use us. We are the ones to blame. All we do is comment on daily political drama, but do too little to kick these politicians out of government. Indian public can not see beyond these charismatic political leaders who never care about us. They get richer and we get poorer.
Lets wake up, unite and all build a rich, strong and united India

    Fire and religion are identical
forces. Fire can obliterate anything and totally transform the
location as a heap of ashes.

Religion can open a river of
    blood in the short notice.

    Politicians use many objects for
political gains, but using religion is the most reckless
    and coldhearted avenue which can
burn cities to ashes and create
    burning pyres everywhere.

India has watched with horror, how
    religion has created bloodshed and
    death in the past.

    For heaven's sake, no political
party should dare to use religion
    as political panacea.

Sure mr Shakheel Ahmed..There is no doubt in this. But you missed out one point. BJP learned this whole religon oriented agenda after seeing your 50 years QUOTA rule. You doing it for some community is fair but BJP supporting another community is not fair ?. Cash leak claimed by Wikileaks not fair which was further confirmed by Julian Assange, but BJP using hidhutva as tool as claimed by wikileaks is correct. First you guys question yourselves what did you do.

The bjp had succeeded in coming to power by demolishing Babri mosque and got short of majority in forming the government then succumbed to coalition called NDA. Mr. Vajayapyee was putting grass to MP's thereby stopping them going astray. Buying and selling MP's was almost started from NDA regime (Now all the parties are involved in buying and selling M.P's) In the year 2008 elections also they played Hindu card and couldn’t succeed. Now and then BJP's trump card is dividing the communities on communal basis by playing Hinduthva card. The bjp is trapped in their own hollow-shallow lectures.
