Karkala: Yellow Rain Takes Ikkodlu Residents by Surprise

Karkala, Mar 28: Ikkodlu near Hebri in the taluk received yellow rain for a few seconds on 
the evening of Sunday March 27. The people were taken aback by the colour of the rain, which was experienced in a radius of about five kms in the region.
The yellow rainwater, which got deposited on leaves, vehicles and other things, was of bad odour. The region is located within the forest area, and no large scale industry is located nearby. Still, many argue that this was acid rain.
Dr Arun Kumar, head of the chemistry department, MGM College, Udupi, reasoned that nitrate found in chemical fertilizer can mix with water to form nitric acid, which is of light yellow colour. He said a definite conclusion about the source of the contamination and reason for this yellow rain can be established only by testing the water.
Retired head of the chemistry department, Poornaprajna College, Udupi, Dr B M Somayaji, also said rainwater can become yellowish by combining with some gases in the environment or some other matter. He too said that detailed tests only would be able to give an answer to the curious questions of the people.
Sullia: Heavy Rain, Lightning, in Subrahmanya
Sullia, Mar 28: Surabhamnya and nearby places registered good rain on Sunday March 27 evening, coupled with lightning and winds of high velocity. Because of this, power supply and telephone connections to the region got snapped.
Villages like Harihara Pallatadka, Ainekidu and Aladangady too got good rains. B C Road, Suillia town, and some other nearby places got light drizzle during late evening on Sunday.
