Two Held for Cricket Betting

New Delhi, March 30 (IANS) A cricket betting syndicate was busted here with the arrest of two men who were accepting bets on Tuesday's World Cup semifinal match between New Zealand and Sri Lanka, police said Wednesday.

"Total bets received by the syndicate was more than Rs.2 lakh. Virender Kumar, 46, and Pushkar Raj, 49, were apprehended from Sriniwaspuri (in south Delhi) Tuesday night following a tip-off," Additional Commissioner of Police Virender Chahal said.

"A constable was sent as a decoy customer. He placed a bet on the match after paying the duo Rs.500," he added.

Both of them were earlier involved in a lottery business in Sonipat, Haryana.
