Udupi: Kasturirangan report – Centre forms committee for physical landscaping

Daijiworld Media Network – Udupi (EP/JD)

Udupi, Jul 25: Bhupendra Yadav, Union minister of forests has directed to conduct physical landscaping as per the request of farmers in the Western Ghats and form a committee of five members to inspect the demands and suggestions of all the states before considering the Kasturirangan report.

The central forest ministry has directed submitting to the ministry the report of a five-member committee considering the suggestions and well being of the farmers within a year.

Union minister and Udupi MP Shobha Karandlaje, in her reaction said that they had alleged earlier that the Kasturirangan report is unscientific and based on satellite pictures.

“Coffee plantations and coconut plantations were also considered forest in the report. We had urged for resurvey to set it right by visiting the villages. None of the previous governments agreed to it. However, forest minister Bhupendra Yadav under the Narendra Modi-led government has taken a decision. They have formed a committee to review the report. They have been asked to visit all the states and districts, conduct a study and submit a report within a year. We have been given breathing time today. The committee will come to ask the issues of the people in our region,” she said.

FIRST OF ALL -- NOT MANY WOULD HAVE READ THE REPORT IN TOTALITY -- This report itself was a major deviation from the earlier Gadgil committee ---- THIS IS PROF GADGIL 's statement on KASTURI RANGAN report --- "I strongly object to people saying the Kasturirangan report was a dilution (WGEEP). It was a perversion because the report prepared by Kasturirangan (panel) has specifically said that the local communities have no role in decision making. This is against our Constitution", he said. "So don't call it dilution. Kasturirangan (panel) perverted the whole (report) and advocated sabotage of democratic process", Gadgil pointed out.

"The Kasturirangan committee report proposes 37 percent of the total area of the Western Ghats, which is roughly 60,000 square kilometers, to be declared as eco-sensitive area (ESA).". So 60,000 square kilometers the committee appointed by the minister will map?. and give a report. By the time this is done (even if done) the people reading this news and the MP, MLA, and ministers .... will be dead and gone. What foolish thinking

, Scientists and environmentalists claim that politicians are misguiding people. They explain that there is no proposal as such in the report that will affect livelihoods of people. They charge that politicians are fooling people to protect--Its various vested interest groups -- Mining mafia -- Resorts -- land developers and grabbers -- etc etc -- ( lobbying through politicians )---- THE INDIGENOUS people are not complaining nor ignorant -- Western Ghats are recognized as one of the eight ‘Hottest Hotspots’ of biological diversity. world over--- WHY LAST 5 years suddenly there are land slides -- many areas flattened -- sites and plantations no longer exist -- wiped away-- road blocks -- highways blocked --

obviously ministers and uneductaed legislators are more thorough in their assessments than subject experts and more knowledgeable. let us hack down all of the wertern ghats and carry out trial blasts around KRS dam - net resut will be a barren Karnataka- perhaps in our own lifetime. That alone will satisfy the thirst and greed of the state's 'netas'.

Criticisms of Kasturirangan committee Report The Kasturirangan panel used remote sensing and aerial survey methods for zonal demarcation of land in the Western Ghats. The usage of such techniques, without examining the ground reality, has caused many errors in the report. The power is vested with the bureaucrats and forest officials and not with gram sabhas. Many fear that the farmers would get evicted if the Kasturirangan Committee report is implemented. Under this report, the mining and quarrying lobbies are expected to flourish. When these lobbies and tourism flourish, it will be disastrous for the environment. There will be a water shortage, there will be pollution. Finally, farmers will have to quit the area. They will not be able to do farming there. The use of “erroneous method” had caused inclusion of many villages under Ecologically Sensitive Areas (ESA) though there were only rubber plantations and no forest land! Kasturirangan report included ecologically non-sensitive areas under ESA, and left out many ecologically sensitive areas!
