Mangaluru, Jul 26: Deputy commissioner (DC) Dr K V Rajendra called upon the concerned officials to strictly implement the notification sent by state government in 2016 and guidelines of central government of 2021 with regards to the prohibition use and throw of single-use plastic items.
Dr Rajendra spoke at the meeting that was held in connection with the implementation of ban on single-use plastic on Monday at the auditorium of DC office in the city.
The DC further said, “According to the plastic waste handling rules of 2016, plastic flags, candi sticks, ice cream sticks, plates, cups, spoons, forks, trays, sweet boxes and Cigarette packets should not be produced, imported, stocked, distributed, sold and used. This rule is in implementation strictly from July 1, 2022.
“Awareness programme with regards to the ill effects of using plastic should be held in the limits of all gram panchayats and local bodies. If violators found, strict action needs to be taken immediately,” he said.
MLAs Vedavyas Kamath and Dr Bharath Shetty also gave useful suggestions. Mayor Premanand Shetty, zilla panchayat CEO Dr Kumar, Mangaluru City Corporation commissioner Akshay Sridhar, environment department officer Kirthi Kumar, concerned officials and sellers were present.
