Karnataka gifts housing sites to World Cup winners

Bangalore, April 3, (IANS): The Karnataka government would allot free housing sites in Bangalore to each of the 15 members of the Indian cricket squad that won the World Cup, Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa announced on Sunday.

"It is a joyous occasion for the entire country. We are proud of the Indian cricket team for winning the World Cup after 28 years. In recognition of their achievement, the state government will gift free sites measuring 372 square metres (4,000 square feet) in Bangalore soon to all the 15 cricketers," a beaming Yeddyurappa told reporters here.

The documents will be presented to the 15 team members at a special function the state government will hold at the imposing Vidhana Soudha at the earliest.

"We will also honour and suitably reward the coach (Gary Kirsten) and the team's support staff for enabling India win the World Cup by comprehensively beating Sri Lanka in Mumbai Saturday. It was an exciting match to watch," Yeddyurappa said.

The government plans to get in touch with the team through the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to organise the function in Bangalore on a date convenient to them after the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL).

"The chief minister has only announced the reward. Details will be worked out. The state-run Bangalore Development Authority (BDA) will be asked to identify the sites, preferably in one location, for preparing and registering the documents," a senior official told IANS.

Yeddyurappa, a keen follower of the game, especially when India plays, watched the final live at his residence in the company of his family members and a couple of his cabinet colleagues.

"The chief minister watched the match during the second half when India was batting and remained glued to the live telecast till skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni hit the winning six," the official said.

Yeddyurappa also watched the semifinal between India and Pakistan at Mohali March 30

These politicians are distributing the public money and land to players as thet r the kings of country. It might nat have happened during mugal/british period. Public should raise voice and compel these politicians to donate their own property. I assure they will never do it however they may allott land to players and later on make benami deals with players

Alwyn Crasta, Neermarga, Mangalore, Yeddy cannot de-notify land to make houses for beggars, thats illegal, there are more important issues pending, our cricketers don’t have houses, that’s his 1st priority, Once de-notification of cricketers land gets over and if there is no complain from HDK then he will think about Beggars colony. He will solve all other problems later. Even flood affected people in north Karnataka are waiting patiently for their houses. Please don’t irritate our C.M. till bye elections are over. There is shortage of liquor for bye election, because all beer & Liquor finished during world cup crickets matches in bars & restaurant. Beggars are with us forever but cricketers may not…..

For ours cricketers performance even we can give whole silicon city to Indian team. What Yeddy has done is correct, Now all of them will come to stay in Karnataka.
Yeddy has promised 60 x 120 plot for Golden Girl Ashwini, and 50 x 90 plots for Kabaddi Gold winner Mamatha after the bye election, now he cannot denotify immediately bcz HDK has kept a CCD camera at his office. God bless Yeddy. What belong to people shall go back to people.

Why should the public money be given the cricketers when they are already getting crores from BCCI and from the sponsorships ?  Grow up people, there are a lot of needy people who go without food in our country everyday. These politicians and giving out the land and cash as if it is their own money.

Dear Yeddi, you dont become a hero or overnight cleansed with this act. You could have used this funds or plan to some other people who were in real need like the flood affected from the north Karnataka or the ones who lost land to idustrialisation. Your PAAPADHA KODA's burden would have been reduced bit. This is just like giving money to Tirupathi man temple. Doesent count any. They are already millioners.

Gone are the days when cricket was a sport. Today it is nothing but business. The game is only illusion. Nobody knows what goes behind that so called victory matches. There are strong rumours that there were 'systematic' efforts to bring India to finals even at the top brass as Indian Cricket Assoc is the richest. It is better to be rational than to be emotional about Indian victory in the world cup.

All public figures have tried to take extra mileage out of the world cup victory. Yeddy is no exception.

It is extremely sad that all are supporting only cricket and all other games/sports in India are simply ignored by one and all.

My suggestion to Yeddy: Sir, your good gesture should be to the people of our own State first. What about the upcoming athletes who brought glory to our state? Actually, our cricketers don't need your money. they have enough and more!

This is a very sad decision from Yeddi. Kiska baap ka kya jaatha hai?

Cricket is biggest curse for 1.2 billion Indians. Due to world cup cricket, Indian productivity is lost 800 million man hours.

Rich cricket players are making millions already. Nothing for the poor Karanataka girls Ashwani, and Mamata Poojary, who won the gold medal at the Asian Games held in China recently.

Congratulations to team India .I feel this facility was not a required one for the Winning team as they are awarded with crores of rupees and also many more facilities are provided to them . If this would be used on the Athletes of Karnataka who also Represent India in International Forum it would it more Helpful to the People of Karnataka to make thier mark in International Forum.

“The discrimination hurts. We are not against cricket or cricketers getting so much money but why are we ignored . Cricketers like Azharuddin who are not from Karnataka have been given incentives and land plots , but world champions like Chitra and Pankaj continue to be ignored,” adds Ashish Balla whose hockey career spanned a decade with over 300 matches but he had to wait four years to get the state award in 2002. Young Indian Icon Pankaj Advani the winner of four world titles has refused to accept the Eklavya award given by the state government for his meritorious performance.

“My fight is not of an individual , it is only to show the apathy that all sportspersons face at the hands of the government,” rues Advani .

I Hope All the Athletes are repected in Near future . All are playing for India ..So Lets Support all Sports .

This is very stupid. Yeddi, first please give the shelter to people of N-Karnataka who were affected by massive flood last year. Remember, winning world cup after 20 years is appreciable, but not so great achievement considering the support, infrastructure for the cricket in this country. People watch cricket since it is more entertaining, not bcoz of patriotism! This Yeddi wants to get public eye by distributing BDA sites/houses.
