Mangalore to Get Road Named After Dhoni?

Mangalore to Get Road Named After Dhoni?

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangalore (PS/SP)

Mangalore, Apr 6: World Cup fever seems to have caught Mangalore City Corporation (MCC) too. The Indian cricket team has been winning accolades and gathering enough booty ever since it won the title of World Champions, and now, it's Mangalore's turn.

Soon, Mangaloreans may find themselves driving through an M S Dhoni road. A similar step has been taken in the capital city of Bangalore too, and if the trend contiues, we may perhaps get to see an M S Dhoni road in every Indian city!

Mayor Praveen Anchan has assured that he would consider the possibility of naming a main road in the city after Indian team captain, though the man from Ranchi has nothing to do with Mangalore personally.

At the general meeting of the MCC held here on Tuesday April 5, the mayor Pravin Kumar said that the request, made by corporator Ashok D K, would be looked into.

The meeting, however, saw much ruckus created by the opposition over the recent 15 percent hike in property taxes in the city. Former mayor, Shashidhar Hegde, corporators, Navin D’Souza, Harinath, Ashok Kumar, etc, vehemently opposed additional burden of house tax, arguing that this will result in double whammy for the citizens, who will also have to pay more because of enhancement of registration value of properties from May onwards. Members of the opposition wore black badges to express their discontentment, and accused the MCC of burdening the middle class. They also alleged that the decision was taken without consultation or discussion with them.

Nevertheless, chairman of the standing committee Sharath did manage to present the annual budget, wherein he informed Rs 183.91 crore was the revenue the MCC expects to collect from various sources like water tax, trade licence, construction sector, markets, penalty etc during 2011-12. The expenditure is expected to be Rs 183.89 crore, thus showing a surplus budget. During 2011-12, a special package grant of Rs 50 crore is expected to be received from the government.

Mariamma Thomas protested against late presentation of the budget, and non-mention about Rs 33 crore pending to be paid to contractors. Then the corporators belonging to the ruling BJP, who alone remained at the meeting, unanimously passed the budget.

He said that  a new 'Nisarga Mitra' office has been opened at the entrance of the municipal office to facilitate easy and quicker service to the citizens seeking information on various matters.

A new vented dam at Thumbay will be constructed at the cost of Rs 7 crore.

In addition, the MCC plans to spend Rs 12.20 crore on development works and Rs 2.75 crore on the welfare of SC/ST communities. A sum of Rs 95 lac has been earmarked to get rid of poverty in the city.

The members paid their tributes to people killed in the recent earthquake and tsunami in Japan, and also observed a minute's silence in memory of former mayor Ramesh Kotian who passed away recently.

Deputy mayor, Geeta N Nayak, and city corporation commissioner, Dr Vijayaprakash, were present.

My concern is why reward and honour are not bestowed on our very much deserving soldiers who died for our country while safeguarding us Indians in the border (Kargil war) and while battling with pak terrorists in Mumbai ? what financial support state governments had given to their families. What honour bestowed on two women of Indian origin Ms. Chawla & Ms.Sunita Williams who were members of American space shuttle expedition who brought glory to the country.
Why public money exorbitantly shelled out on those cricketers by the state governments who are already highly rich in terms of their income from so many sources.

Our central/state governments should spend money on developments of every citizen by providing them good medical facilities at village level, free education at primary level atleast for the poor families and so forth. Don't concentrate wealth in few hands. Let us abolish corruption by joining hands with Sriman Anna Hazare than wasting time on unnecessary dabates on cricketers. Our madness towards only cricket game to be deminished. Yes, we are highly honoured by winning cricket world cup 2011. But let us not cross our boundaries in honouring cricketers by misusing funds of the public.

It's a great feeling to know India has won the cricket world cup and the roads are being named after Dhoni. But if the same Indian team would have lost the match that day, Dhoni's current house would have disappeared from the street where it once used to be.Our Indian's are too serious about a simple cricket match. They even rejoice on victory over Pakistan. does this victory over a simple cricket match accounts for 170 lives lost on 26th Nov 2008 in Mumbai because of few Pakistani's who entered the country with foul intentions.?
Keep it cool cricket fans, Winning and losing are two sides of the same coin, no need to escalate the Victory to this extent.
People have purchased tickets worth Rs 50,000/- that day to see the match in Wankhede and there are so many people who may have not even had their day's meal that evening.

This decision if it comes into effect exposes the stupidity and idolatry of we Mangaloreans as well Indians! Yes, winning the world cricket cup is a great achievement and for sure Dhoni is a 'cool captain'. So was Kapil Dev! He won the World Cup for us in 1983...and at that time no big money in crores were ever offered to the Indian cricket team members! This is pure 'band wagon stuff' Name road after the Indian soldier Gireesh who died mysteriously while guarding our borders (he gets paid peanuts for guarding us!) while all of us were happily and boisterously watching the match!

The present day’s cricketers are paid ridiculous sums of money and every chief mister of all the states in India wants to do something or other for the team just to get their names published in the media and a photo opportunity with MS Dhoni and the team! Stupid Indian politicians! Why don't they give money or land to the poor beggars and street people and pose for pictures with them? Just asking!

Some one has commented that MSD is an outsider. Is he a Paki or Bangladeshi. This mentality is totally deviding and un acceptable. MSD is very much Indian and he played for and lifted the WC for India. We are all part and parcel of this great country. If Kashmir bleeds we feel the pain and Uttarkand is one of the states of our country. One uses Kashmir for political gain. We need to honour the achievers, martyrs who have laid down their lives in protecting our boundaries. We have named some roads as Bhagat Singh Road, Anil Kumble Road, Anand Rao cirlce etc, why not Dhoni Road...He is an Indian and in any part of India his name can be honoured. We dont need regionalism like Bal or Raj Thackeray. Raj has beaten non marathis and asked them to leave Mumbai. But these heros of WC Cricket played for nation and played for Sachin and dedicated this achievement and Cup to Sachin who is a marathi... When the politicians use regionalism for their personal gains, whole of India stood for one man, i.e Sachin. This is a lesson for Thakerays.... We are united and dont try to devide us... In the team we had sikhs, muslims, hindus, and christians.. We as a team are one, we as a nation are one and our motto is our nation and dont devide us and u shall fail in your efforts.. Jai ho Team India.. Jai Ho MSD, Jai Ho Sachin and Long live our great India.. Politicians please take lessons from team India....

Of course now Mr. Dhoni won world cup this time and he is the hero of the nation as well as for cricket world. with the money Govt and the individuals (cricketers) can think of charity work to the mankind and nation like the cancer Hospital built by Pakistan and world icon cricketer great Imran Khan.

A few days back his parents celebrated his birthday at his residence in Bangalore. It was really pain to see his mother Wiping in tears in his rememberance. Spot on Mr. R.J.Fernandes, Kallianpur/Goa/usa - Indian's are and have never been practical - impulsive and emotional. There cannot be anything more abusrd than what (so far) has been Yeddi's magnanamity to the players, BCC & MCC naming Roads after MSD. There are and have been more people worthy of such genorosity. Even naming the (Oriental Circel on MG Road) Anil Kumble Circle was not a good move - as a living person's life can go any which way - the right method is what the Church does when sainthood is granted to mortal's - several years of research and consultations and only then one gets the coveted title. On a lighter note and this says it all abiut the nuances of Cricketers / Cricket - Srishanth's Mother in an interview - Blaming Dhoni (bad captaincy for not giving another over to Srishanth at the WC Final - had he got the 9th over to bowl - Dhoni would have scored a Century !!!!

Day by day costs are increasing...no one is bother....All these idiots are thinking only about Cricket. I am also a cricket fan. When India won world cup, i also celebrated with my friends. Look at citizens of other countries and learn from them. Treat game as a game. Do you think out of 121 millions only these 11 players are playing cricket well? Many people are there, but no one is ready to sponsor them. Just think about others who brought gold medals in olympics and CWG. Why no one came forward like this?
    What a shame on us!

Naming a particular location, creating a monument after an exemplary figure should have some concrete action. In this case, if MS Dhoni is made to come down, trains few of our talented boys and recruits at least one of them for the next world Cup will definetely justify our action.

Dear Mangalorians !Wake up..please donot rename the city street for a cricketer.instead do something else.Provide safe drinking water, plant trees, see the trash and garbage at Mangalore, also near city bus stand there are very less toilets.
Know the fact these cricketers make more money than politicians and our stupid politicians give them more..instead these cricketers should donate and give more to charity. Have you heard anyone doing so? Selfish people.only make money.and more money ..let them also give to the society ! Please wake up to the truth..Do not let the cricket fewer kill you ! save our beautiful city.At least remember the hero's of mangalore who have done great work here.

MCC is not doing enough to make the city roads safe for driving and walking rather interested in re-naming them. We are proud that our boy have achieved the World cup 2011. But, it is not just the work of M.S.Dhoni.
MCC is looking for easy way of impressing the public but, reluctant to carry on their duties / responsibilities.

Good gesture. The road MS Dhoni can be used as cricket ground to practice and play and become big mangalorean cricketer and HQ at mangalore muncipal corporation.
Instead create Play ground and give the name MAHENRA SINGH DHONI SO that boys play cricket and become national champions. By naming road boys will not become cricketers.

I have a small suggestion to make to MCC.To satisfy all and show our unflinching respect for cricket/our team captain Dhoni, why can't we change the name of Mangalore city itself and rename as "M.S.DHONI NAGAR"
    Howz that?!!!

We should name Bajpe int'l airport as Dhoni Airport. This will avoid controversies between different communities with so many suggestions. Cricket is such a unifying sport ! Can't we re-name Mangalore Railway station also under him only ? Whose father's what goes ?

    Dear Mr.Dhoni,
I am very proud of you for your captaincy & the teams success. I am also a cricket lover.Cricket is a game of 11 players, You can not give such type of credit to a single individual. This is not Tennis Singles.Beware of these honours. Are you the same Dhoni who was gifted a house/banglow in Ranchi on your tremendous suscess and later on stoned by public and destroyed the same when you lost in one of the tours.
Similarly, they will name a road on you & when your bad days (form)comes they will remove your name & put some other name like A.Raja,or Bal Thackray etc etc.
These Indian emotions are 'subject to change'.

We are proud about Indian cricket team for getting world cup. Now stop carrying them over the head. Karnataka govt d to give all of them 4K sq feet BDA site, each of them get 1cr rs and millions in advertisement contracts. Don't we have any other personalities from Mangalore who really served for Mangalore. We should stop treating players as soldiers and soldiers as beggers.
