Mangaluru, Aug 7: Two months have passed since PU classes have begun in the state. However, students who reside in hostels and study are facing inconvenience.
Hostel facility was provided to students as soon as the PU classes used to begin. However, this year the degree students have not yet vacated their rooms. So there is no opportunity for PU students to reside in hostels.
Now the biggest issue is that the degree and post graduate students have still been accommodated in their hostel rooms as their exams are not yet over. Their exams are slated to be held around September end. Till then there is no solution to this problem.
For the past many years, students used to apply for the SC/ST hostels managed by social welfare department and backward classes welfare department and get the rooms. However, this year both departments have got together and are giving hostel rooms through counselling.
The process involved giving hostel rooms based on merit. The time period to apply for post-metric students’ hostel got over on July 15. Already those who have applied have been given rooms in hostel. Those who are still remaining to be accommodated cannot get any room in hostel until and unless degree students go out of the hostels.
Srinivas Poojary, minister for social welfare and backward classes welfare department said, “Department is working towards resolving the issues faced by the PU students. I will hold a meeting in this connection shortly with the senior officers of the department and provide a solution.”
