'CBI Officer' Arrested in Puttur !

Puttur, Apr 9: A person, who carried himself with the tag of a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI)  officer since the last two years, and successfully hoodwinked people into believing him to be so, was arrested by the policemen of the town on Thursday April 7.  Luck had run out for the man in question, who had cheated a number of people by flashing his fake identity card, whenever there was a need.

He has been identified as Dennis D’Souza (40), a native of Arla in Nelyady in the taluk. He has a wife and three children, and whatever little agricultural land he had, was sold off by him to get money for leading a luxurious life. It is learnt that Dennis, while working as a typist in a typing centre here, thought of an idea for easy living. He felt he could lead a good life if he can make people believe that he was a CBI officer. He immediately got a fake identity card prepared, and started introducing himself as a CBI officer. Because of his robust personality, decent dress sense and confident appearance, people believed what he said, without questioning.

D’Souza used to talk tall, and make people pay him money by speaking about certain cases. He used to take things from shops without paying for them. The plan continued to bear fruits till four months ago, when he bought things worth Rs 1,700 from a fancy shop owned by Nazeer in K P Complex in the town. When he came to the shop again on April 7, the shop owner demanded money, but he refused to pay, showing his identity card which said that he was a CBI officer.

After Nazeer complained to the police, he was summoned to the police station. Initially, the policemen too believed that he was a CBI officer. However, further questioning by inspector, K Srikant, and sub-inspector, Ravikumar, revealed his true identity. A case was registered against him, and the accused was remanded to judicial custody on his production in the court.
