Mangalore: Conversion Row: Hindu Outfits Urge Govt Intervention

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangalore

Mangalore, Apr 9: A protest was organised by Hindu outfits, including the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) Bajrang Dal, here on Saturday April 9 over the series of alleged conversion cases that have cropped up in the city over the last few days.

Launching an attack against the charity and prayer centres run by Christians, the protesters alleged that Christian missionaries have been resorting to conversion in the name of providing free shelter and education to the poor from rural and backward Hindu families.

In a memorandum addressed to chief minister Yeddyurappa and submitted to the deputy commissioner, they appealed to the government to look into the matter and take action against those involved in such activities.

VHP leader M B Puranik said that the root cause for conversion was the colonial rule that brought in a number of British and Portuguese missionaries to India, whose activities are continuing to this day. Moreover, he lamented that while Christians and Muslims are free to make use of government benefits under the minorities tag, Hindus in other countries have neither benefits nor recognition.

Speaking on the occasion, Gurpur Vajradehi Mutt chief Rajashekharananda Swamiji also urged the authorities to take appropriate steps against the practice of conversion in the guise of charity.

Former deputy mayor Rajendra Kumar, VHP leader Mohan Tulajaram, Yuva Morcha leader Raghavendra, ABVP secretary Vinay Jadhav and others were present.

nagesh nayak's views are one sided only. Maybe he uses only one eye to see, one ear to listen, one nostril to breathe, one arm to lift and one leg to walk. He does all this, because he is lazy to use them. Same way his thinking, only one dimensional. He equates India with ITALY. Pretty soon, he might want Italian coach for Indian Cricket team, now that Gary Kirsten has retired and gone back to South Africa. his thinking is not balanced.

When I read NN, Bangalore comments it really sounds to be silly and childish. Why is BJP, VHP, RSS, BD (All are the branches of One Tree but always say they do not have connection to each other for any criminal act) so worried and concerned of the good activities of the Christians. We are only 2% population and why is that 50% hindu population fear us.

After all we are human beings of ONE GOD. It is we human beings have created different gods and religion for our convenience and greedy needs. If Europe and USA have troubled the world is there anything less in BJP in India etc. There are so many instances and there is no point in being TU TU MEIN MEIN. It is time we have progressive mind and thinking and stop being too arrogant, adopt cheap tactics. Whatever BD and its cronies has been doing in last few days is nothing but expressing their fear. They should know that we all human beings are children of one god.

The rich and poor, the higher and low caste have the same body, same blood and same flesh and eat the same food. There is so much to be done in this country i.e., there is shortage of water, Shortage of food, Corruption to the core, so much poverty and so on and instead of thinking on these issues they are busy spying on christians. Wake up we have not seen but we have seen God's creation i.e, human beings. Let us take care of our brothers and sisters. We are all one.

France is not banned only veil, but they banned all the religious symbols to wear in the public including cross, don't try to put hatred in the innocent minds. It is best you take the land from BJP Govt. and start one Orphanage, so it will continue generation to generation in your name, anyhow the BJP considers only Hindu's are Indian citizens and rest all foriegners in their own land. Everybody run to BIG BROTHER USA when they are in trouble same way how the Libyans asking USA and the European countries to come to their rescue. Dear Mr. Sudharsan Shetty & Mr Durgadas Suvarna,

selecting students on merit in Hindu Institutions is okay if you have the same cut off marks for all Hindu students but why it is different for different communities? Why Sangh Parivar is not fighting against this? With my experience I can tell you donations are more in Hindu institutions than catholic schools and that is why poor Hindus can not get seats. What Bajarang Dal is doing on this?

Here we have Sangh Parivar people including supporters like you telling that Christians are doing the social service with ulterior motive of conversion which is totally baseless and unfounded. In Mangalore Catholics are responsible for giving best education to lakhs of Mangaloreans like me without expectation of any favours. They are also responsible for giving free medical facilities to thousands of poor people with only service mind.

When it comes to education, I have very bad experience in Hindu Schools. In Mumbai I had tried seat for my children in Hindu Schools and again we did not get preference because we do not belong to particular community whereas I could get admission in very good Catholic school with no difficulty in a normal process. My son wanted to go for medicine and we tried to get admission in Hindu Colleges but the donation was too high. Finally we had to put him a medical college run by Minorities which had reasonable donation. Now tell me what your Sangh Parivar is doing? Instead of wasting their time on nonsense things and getting publicity for their political survival they can very well fight against this injustice.

From my experience I can tell you catholic institutions impart discipline in students and teach how to live together. No discrimination between students and stresses on students to help and love each other. That is why we look at the people as just human beings and not as you look Hindus, muslims and Christians. From the comments you have been making, I just want to ask you if Hindu Institutions teach you to divide the people on the basis of religion and if it is so then I do not want my future generation to go to Hindu schools at all.

Looks like this is well laid out plan to achieve certain political goals. Firstly it started out with attack on beef stall and restaurants serving beef. Then the conversion bogey. I wonder what is next? This is just to show the Christian community in poor light and blame them for the ills affecting the society.

What I believe will happen is that these attacks will continue and the finale may be a Gujarat style riot targeting Christians and their businesses or institutions. These will be orchestrated by some rich people in the background but will be uted by the poor underprivileged Hindus.

The incentive for the latter is a small share in the spoils. The stage is then set for the rich to step-in and grab the assets of the Christians (mainly real estate) This strategy was employed in the Gujarat and Orissa riots and it is a question to time before it is tried in Mangalore. My brethren beware!!

Luke 21:12 But before all these, they shall lay their hands on you, and persecute you, delivering you up to the synagogues, and into prisons, being brought before kings and rulers for my name's sake.

Luke 21: 17 And ye shall be hated of all men for my name's sake.

It is entirely false perception that Christians convert people from other casts by providing them education, health care services etc.

In fact it is a BIG SIN to convert an individual by offering facilities like these. It is high time for Indians to change their views on religion. As rightly said by Veena D’souza, “religions made by human beings on earth”. Yes, that is very true, religions are man made and not made by god.

In fact, religions are just various modes through which people achieve their spiritual goals.

There is no any Conversion happening atleast in Roman Catholic institutions, we are not concerned about other Catholic Groups. We all youngsters believe that there is only one God, may be names are different like Jesus, Ram, Alla etc., Just to convey our Hindu brothers evil is in their mind, we are ready to become Hindu. Would like to know how and who is authorised to convert us and this should happen in Public with media coverage. We visit Temple, Church and Mosque everywhere we are praying with same ONE ALMIGHLY GOD. (Pictures and photos and status may be having different look). Is any other Roman Catholics with me.. please give in-put.

Now these uneducated protesters of Hindu fundamentals are thinking on the other way that the present Christian population is 80 percent.
Dear uneducated protesters your calculation is wrong. Christians are only 2.2 percent in India.

Once again in your blind eye and hollow mind says that British were the main cause Gandhiji fought against British rule and got independence however he also miscalculated/ underestimated the dividing power within. Ultimately we lost east and west.

    Dear Mr. Sudharsan Shetty, Mangalore

You do not know the quality of education you get from the Christian institutions because you did not get the opportunity. I studied in St. Aloysius College and my children studied in St. John the Baptist High School, Thane and we all got very good education. Nobody converted us and on the contrary imparted good discipline in us to be good citizens.

There is no discrimination in Christian institutions and they treat all students equal. I would like to give one example. In 1975, I joined St. Aloysius in Science stream and my close friend of childhood (a Hindu) wanted to pursue Commerce and wanted admission in a good Hindu College. He was denied admission even though he had good marks because cut off marks were very high as he did not belong to particular community. Then he got admission in St. Aloysius, got rank both in PUC and B.com and was adjudged as best student in the Centenary year 1980. He was felicitated by Neelam Sanjeeva Reddy, then President. Remember a Hindu College had rejected him and a Christian College rewarded him. This is a true story and you can check the records of St. Aloysius College.

Before making comments please check with the people who got education from the Christian institution for their experience. Remember even the great personalities like Justice Santhosh Hedge, Dr. Devi Shetty are products of St. Aloysius College. At the same time understand the discrimination in the Hindu Institutions which is still centered on caste and community.

So as mentioned by many readers Mr. Shanawaz/ Mr Rajesh Shetty, it is the time will strongly oppose false propaganda of BJP Govt, they are diverting public attention from corruption scandals to religion. The Persecution of Christians in the Roman Empire is the religious persecution of Christians as a consequence of professing their faith. It began during the Ministry of Jesus and continued intermittently over a period of about three centuries until the time of Constantine when Christianity was legalized. Shortly thereafter it became the state religion of the Roman Empire. This persecution impacted all aspects of Christian life including the development of the Canonical gospels, Christian theology and the structure of the Church.
Christians were persecuted by local authorities on a sporadic and ad-hoc basis.Among other things, persecution sparked the cult of the saints, facilitated the rapid growth and spread of Christianity, prompted defenses and explanations of Christianity (the "apologies")and,in its aftermath, raised fundamental questions about the nature of the Christian Church.
    Early Christianity(c.30–325)
The Pope(from Latin: papa from Greek:(pappas),a child's word for father)is the Bishop of Rome, a position that makes him the leader of the worldwide Catholic Church (which is composed of the Latin Rite and the Eastern Catholic Churches in full communion with the see of Rome). The current office-holder is Pope Benedict XVI,who was elected in a papal conclave on 19 April 2005.
The office of the pope is known as the Papacy,(Vatican city). His ecclesiastical jurisdiction is often called the"Holy See" or the "Apostolic See" based upon the Church

This is thev right time to ban VHP
    Bhajrang Dal,Hindu Jagarana Vedike
and many other communal outfits of
    Sangh Parivar which destroy peace
and tranquility in Mangalore.Who has given right to M.B.Puranik,
    Shivananda Mendon,Sharan Pumpwell,
    Gopal Kutthar,Swami Rajashekaranand
and others to inspect Christian run
    Ashrams?If M.B.Puranik and his men
want to do some good work, let them
go after those fraud Babas and Astrologers who cheat poor people.
    Puranik should visit some European
countries and see how secular they are.Puranik is a retired person and
he should work for the society and
not divide the society in the name
of religion. We all should join hands with Anna Hazare to flush out
    VHP and Bhajrang Dal,the communal
    groups as early as possible.Puranik
should get some jobs for those Bajrang Dal members who are uneducated and unemployed.M.B.Puranik is running
Sharada Vidyala. So let him also run
some Ashrams with the help of his
    Bajrang Dal friends.

To Mr Shanawaz, about how Islam & Christianity spread in Karnataka.

I don't mean offense to anyone nor do I have any problems with this issue but deffinitly why dont you guys except facts ?

Islam, which had an early presence on the west coast of India as early as the tenth century, gained a foothold in Karnataka with the rise of the Bahamani and Bijapur sultanates that ruled parts of Karnataka.
Therefore dont just assume that monkey ruled or lived in Karnataka before that!

Christianity reached Karnataka in the sixteenth century with the arrival of the Portuguese and St. Francis Xavier in 1545. The especially decended from Goa towards south during the Marata war's.
Forget 2 % or 5 %, are the people living today are direct relatives or generations of these decendents from 10th or 16th century ? If Yes then there is no point in arguing with your brother, if not from where did todays population come from ? Conversion's ? or from some random ships ? since we dint have active Emigration control then!
    Source for the facts:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Karnataka
You talk about ONLY 2% or ONLY 5%, are you sure with your figures ? who has counted this ? Last time when the central Govt proposed caste based survey , am sure you know who or which sect opposed this, for all know what reasons & you guys talk about 2% or ONLY 5%. Talking about this bajrangis's, someone needs to come out with some strong pestcontrol.

You people have no account of both - those converted out as well as in. Why waste your time public ? Noting is going to change except for future activities of Christian charity organizations will be sans Hindu beneficiaries.

if the VHP/BD are ture in their statement, then I would say by now all inmates in christian run welfare organisations would have been christians.. I just reiterate my earlier stand that no minors are forced to change their religion. If an adult converts, then no has the right to question... Forcing minors and children to change their religion is crime punishable by law...All my children studied in christian run institutions and they were free to fast and pray. No one has forced them to change their religion. Secocndly Mr Puranik said that in India minorities are getting benefits... Mind you they too are the bonafide citizens of this country by birth... If hindus want these benefits from a foreign nation, then they must become the citizens of that country. In UK and US many Indians have got the nationalities and are enjoying all the benefits provided by the state in line with the original citizens of that country. Just stop spreading malicious and unfounded propaganda against these christians. You people are just misleading the general public. If British and Portuguese have been converting Indians ever since they came to India, could you please tell the readers that why then the christian population is still less than 5% of our total populace... It holds good with muslim rulers who invaded and ruled India... One cnat just misguide.. These safron parties are bent upon disturbing the peace in the society... Disgusting...

Dear Rajesh Shetty, I salute you for your frank statement that you studied in a Chirstian school and you still follow Hinduism. I am certain 98% of Hindus feel that same. The allegation that there is forceful conversion is false and politically motivated. I want all Hindus to stand by truth. We want to know openly how many were forced to convert in schools, instituions and in orphnages. I wish that if there is any forceful conversion, it should be proved in court, and the culprits should be punished because "FORCEFUL" means using all kinds of means like sword, gun, knife, money, property, alcohol, drugs, sex and other inhuman means to make someone accept a religion which one freely does not want, but gets into it through 'FORCE'. Can this be really true? If all the allegations were true, there should have been such a lots of Christians all over India. But as Ivan Tauro mentions since 30 years Christians are just the same percentage. Whereas Hindus has risen to "MILLIONS MORE". Jai Ho Bharat Mata ki, Jai. Doddanna - Damaskatte - Abudhabi

As Mr. Ivan Tauro has stated,
    the percentage of the Indian
    Christian population is around
2.5%. So, the fabricated statistics of "forced
conversion" in big numbers is simply
    a false political propaganda to
    confuse the Hindu electorate.

Mr. Rajesh Shetty and Mr. Naveen
    Shetty have clearly stated the
    underlying tricks of the VHP/BD
    etc.

By the number of people showing
public displeasure in the conversion issue is perhaps less
than 3 dozen people. That itself
shows this antiquated anti-conversion issue has totally lost
    interest with the average and
    educated Hindus of India. Since
a great majority of the educated
    Hindus have studied in Christian
schools and colleges, and they were never forced to convert
to Christian faith. A great many
    prominent political leaders of
all political parties in India, including the BJP leaders, have
    studied in well known Christian
    colleges like Lyola College,
    St. Stephens College, Madrass
Christian College, Wilson College etc. Please ask
them, whether they were forced to
    convert to Christian faith!
