Rains Bring Reprieve, Lightning Claims Five Lives in State

Daijiworld Media Network - Bangalore

Bangalore, Apr 11: The weather seems to have started playing hide and seek. While the last few days were unbearably hot, light rains accompanied by thunder hit the state on Sunday April 10, and even claimed five lives.

Coastal and other parts of the state witnessed unusual and sudden changes in the weather. However, the rising mercury levels had given an indication of imminent rainfall.

According to reports reaching daijiworld, there has been light to heavy rainfall in a few districts in the state. The heavy lightning killed three people in north Karnataka and two in Shimoga.

Lightning and rain were also reported in Gadag, Bagalkot, Bijapur, Sindagi and other places of north Karnataka.

Udupi experienced moderate rains, while in Mangalore there was thunder accompanied by drizzle in a few areas.

Puttur too recorded rainfall, and locals say the region gets moderate rains every year between April 10 and 19.

After days of scorching weather, the rains provided a welcome reprieve in many parts of the state.

In such lightening and thundering situation,in villages, if you are inside the house first thing you must do is to put off the main power switch. Use candle. Do not use land line or cell phone.

In olden days, the elders used to tell the youngers to throw a metal piece say "Koithi" - "Kathi" into courtyard. If youngers refused they used to say " you fool, do what I say, if the lightening strikes the metal it will turn into Golden". It was, only enticing the younger to obey the elsders and save the life. Lightening strikes the metal first. It also passes through good conductors - wires. Here, it is not the metal turns into Golden but he the persons life will turn into Golden if he survives from striking lightening on to this house where the metal piece is lying inside.

In cities for the Buildings, Litghtening Arrester is installed for safety.

It was last day of 'Polali Chendu' and it is expected to rain as always. I remember the days when we used to see the fireworks of Polali and our 'granny' used to say its going to rain during the 'Kade Chedu'.

When thunderstorms approach there are steps should take to lower chance of becoming a lightning strike statistic. These safety procedures are suggested by the National Weather Service:
•When a thunderstorm threatens, get inside a home or large building, or inside an all-metal (not convertible) vehicle
•Inside a home, avoid using the telephone, except for emergencies
•If outside, with no time to reach a safe building or an automobile, follow these rules
•Do not stand underneath a natural lighting rod such as a tall, isolated tree
•Avoid projecting above the surrounding landscape as you would do if you were standing on a hilltop, in an open field, on the beach, or fishing from a small boat
•Get out of & away from open water
•Get away from tractors & other metal farm equipment
•Get off of & away from motorcycles, scooters,& bicycles.
•Stay away from wire fences, clotheslines, metal pipes, rails & other metallic paths which could carry lightning to you from some distance away.
•Avoid standing in small isolated sheds or other small structures in open areas.
•In a forest, seek shelter in a low area under a thick growth of small trees. In open areas, go to a low place such as a ravine or a valley. Be alert for flash floods.
•If you're hopelessly isolated in a level field of prairie & you feel your hair stand on end-indicating that lightning is about to strike- to your knees & bend forward putting your hands on your knees. Do not lie flat on the ground.
