Mangaluru, Aug 15: Controversy erupted after miscreants wrote ‘freedom fighter Veer Savarkar circle’ on the pillar of Suratkal flyover and also hung a flex which has the image of Savarkar.
SDPI Suratkal unit expressed objection for the writing as well as the flex and brought the same to the attention of the police. The Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) officials removed the flex after commissioner Akshy Sridhar issued the orders for the same after he received a complaint.
Earlier, some youths who were present there resorted to displaying Tipu Sultan Circle flex.
Speaking on the issue, MLA Dr Bharath Y Shetty said, “There is a proposal to change the name of Suratkal circle to Veer Savarkar circle by obtaining permission from MCC.”
Aboobacker of SDPI said that Suratkal is a communally sensitive area and they contacted the officials immediately. He also said that they oppose the naming of Suratkal circle as Veer Savarkar circle.
