Mangaluru: Order issued to shut down 16 polluting fish meal factories

Mangaluru, Aug 18: The state pollution control board has ordered the closure of 16 fish meal factories that are functioning at Ullal and Mukka for violating the water and air conservation and control act.

The president of state pollution control board had ordered the deputy commissioner of Dakshina Kannada to ensure the closure of the 16 fish meal factories. Mescom was also notified to remove their electricity connection.

The local revenue inspector visited all the 16 facilities and got them closed. This order was taken out by the board as the fish meal factories did not filter the waste water before releasing it into the sea through bio filter machine. In some factories, though the bio filter machine is installed, it does not work properly.

On the other hand, owners of fish meal factories have approached the court and are arguing that the pollution control board did not follow the rules and has taken out order all of a sudden. Officials said that the court has stayed the order of the pollution control board.

    After the order to close fish unit's in ullal sea side there's no effect off it coz it has started again and the smell is so horrible that we can't open our window s i request the concerned authorities (pollution control board) to look in this matter

    The comments given by above guys all superb But before commenting let's see some facts I am not anywhere related to this industry. 1) This industry is been operating in this areas for more than 70 years. 2) The waste water which is been going to sea is fish washed and Processed water waste which is again consumed by fishes. 3) This industries does not use any chemicals in processing the fish so there Is no discharge of any chemicals. 4) Yes I agree on the stenky smell of rotten fish but these factories Are located at mukka and ullala where fishing areas form longtime Where this areas now been developed as residential area. 5) if these factories are closed do you know the whole Mangalore will start stinking and the sea will be filled with rotten fish. When the fishermen go for fishing 40 percent of fishes are not edible what to do with this fish if this factories are not there They have to dump in our pachanady and it is around 6000 tons per day. 6) our local people directly or indirectly more than 45000 families rely on this industries. We as public and kspcb have no problem when mrpl,hpcl and mcf factories discharge the chemicals tothe sea . I support our fishermen and fish industries . Atma nirbhar Bharat

    Suffering so many years in Mukka and Suratkal. Even with Biofilter Mukka factories are causing bad smells and pollution. Unless pollution board takes good action like this, this will be a be big problem for all.

    Wow!!! This has come from nowhere!! just Wow!! One who is from the vicinity where more than a dozen factories are scrambled in a small piece of land with 24/7, 365 days smell and waste water is poured to the river/sea, where people no more swim in both, Where more people are having breathing difficulties but keeping quite for a small benefit, where mosques, temples, sports organisations and schools are given contribution (haftha) to keep quite, where the usual suspects in haftha were making merry all these years, this news is just Wow!!!

    Sea water on the coast of DK is polluted since long time by such industries. Big industries like MRPL are also polluting the water even though they claim their waste is treated. This is exactly reason why fish population is becoming scarce in DK region. Even the fish which is caught is of poor quality.

    Wht nonsense.. Even though pollution control has not given the notice. Are the factory owners responsible to NOT to pollute the environment.. Wht a baseless argument... They should be heavily punished.... They will have their houses in good location.. Locals staying near thier factory suffer...

    funny thing is that in corrupt countries licence is given without any verification...so much so even driving licence....so these kind of factories regularly give 40 percent to the concerned babus...only when public makes some noise action is taken....

    There is a fish factory at Mukka which discharges waste and fumes of very stinky smell. Most of the surrounding people suffer with lungs disease. Some of them left the place. In spite of complaints no action is taken by the corporation.

    After long consideration the KPC has acted on proper lines. But, the legal action nullifies it now n will drag for long.. The environment is more n more polluted. The transportation of the rotting fish across our city of M'lore is curse n bane for citizens... Pray authorities will be just n timely. Thanks
