Mangaluru, Aug 26: 'The Life and Times of George Fernandes' , a biography of statesman and former union minister George Fernandes written by Dr Rahul Ramagundam was released at Sanidhya Hall of St Aloysius College here on Friday, August 26.
Speaking on the occasion Bishop of Mangaluru Diocese Peter Paul Saldanha stated that in the 1980s when George Fernandes visited Kinnigoli people were eager to see him and hear his words.
"Then, in his speech, George spoke about our participation in nation-building and he was so courageous and wanted to bring about a change in the country," Bishop said.
Then, during his visit to the district, he narrated about his personal life and the political developments taking place in the country, he added.
He joined the socialist party at a young age of 19 years. Later, he rose to a great position. He also encouraged our soldiers as defence minister during the Kargil wars, Bishop said.
"Goerge was for the people and mostly for the depressed classes. He was for the voiceless. He knew the plight of poor workers. He was the man who spent his energy relentlessly and selflessly for the poor and needy, marginalised and downtrodden. He understood the implication of democracy and convinced the people to know the power of the people," Bishop said.
Brother of George Fernandes, Michael Fernandes explained how Dr Rahul Ramagundam made elaborate research to complete the book.
"The manner of presenting George took birth here. Later, we visited various places."
"Father wanted George to go to college and do a law degree to help people. But, he was not keen on that. He was a rebel in the family but not with selfish motives. He was always willing to help others," Michael added.
Stating that a media portrayed George as a non-believer, Michael said that George was not an atheist.
He also said that he was too busy as a union minister and traveling to different parts of the country in a single day.
Dr Rahul Ramagundam, Micheal Fernandes, and Collin D'Silva were felicitated on the occasion.
Fr Melwin Joseph Pinto presented the review of the book. Rev Dr Praveen Martis, SJ, Principal of Aloysius welcomed. Dr. Alwyn D'Sa, Registrar of the Aloysius college, and others were present.
