Udupi, Aug 31: A gang that arrived in a car abducted, assaulted and robbed two students while they were returning to Manipal after finishing catering work at Kalsanka junction Tuesday late night.
The Udupi station police have arrested a gang of four in this connection.
The students Braitil Biju and Mohammed Inas, studying in a nursing college at Manipal, were walking towards Manipal after catering work at a hotel near Karavali Bypass when they signalled for a drop from KA–01-MA-5287 car approaching from Karavali Bypass at Kalsanka junction.
There were four people including the driver in the car. As the car stopped the students refused to enter it due to the smell in the car. Meanwhile, one of the gang members got down from the car, brandished a knife and threatened to kill the students if they did not sit in it and abducted them.
The gang members snatched the mobile phones of the students, assaulted them at Doddanagudde park and demanded Rs 2 lac ransom. One of the students escaped from them and complained to the police station. The gang took the other student in the car to Kaup, Shirva and assaulted him. The police arrested the gang near Shirva.
A case in this connection is registered at Udupi city police station.
