Four detained in Guj in illegal trafficking of newborn from Delhi

Vadodara (Gujarat), Sep 5 (IANS): The Vadodara city police have detained four persons in connection with the trafficking of an eight-day-old baby girl.

The four were detained on Sunday when a couple from Delhi delivered the newborn to a Vadodara couple.

The City Police registered a complaint and detained four persons from the Vadodara railway station area on Sunday evening.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Abhay Soni told the local media that, "Vadodara's Saurabh Vora and his wife Soma were detained with the possession of a baby girl near the railway station. In the primary inquiry, the couple told the police that they were given the baby by Puja Harishankar and Dipak Kumar Shivcharan, who are residents of Delhi's Karol Bagh area."

When police sought for the baby's birth certificate and documents of her real parents, Puja and Dipak failed to provide the same to the police, said the officer, and added that the baby girl has been admitted to the SSG hospital for medical examination and treatment.

"Delhi Police has also been informed about the case. The local police on its own will continue the investigation whether it is a genuine adoption case or of child trafficking, police will also investigate whether the two accused from Delhi are into a major inter state child trafficking racket and who else are involved with them," said DCP.
