Mangalore: Help 18-year-old Olivia Regain Health, Happiness

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangalore

Mangalore, Apr 19: Olivia Pinto, an 18-year-old student of I BCom at Philomena College, Puttur, was a smart, brilliant student, until tragedy struck without any warning on April 4, and turned her life on its head.

Daughter of Oswald Pinto of Our Lady Virgin of the Poor parish, Uppinangady, Olivia has been diagnosed with GB syndrome, a disorder affecting the peripheral nervous system, with no definite causes.

On April 4, she complained of severe pain in her neck and felt her entire body going weak. She was immediately taken to a private medical practitioner in Uppinangady, who directed her to be taken to a specialized clinic in Puttur. Later, she was shifted to City Hospital in Puttur, but during the night her condition deteriorated. City Hospital's Dr Bhaskar arranged for an ambulance and two nurses to shift Olivia, who was on oxygen, to a private hospital in Mangalore.

As it was past midnight, no specialist doctors were available at Fr Muller Medical College Hospital, and she had to be admitted to KMC Hospital in Mangalore. Dr Suresh Hegde, a specialist, examined Olivia and diagnosed her to be suffering from GB syndrome. She was taken to ICU for immediate treatment. Dr Hegde also said that she needs 21 IVG injections for 5 days, each injection costing Rs 18,000. Fortunately, she has been responding to the IVG injections.

However, Oswald is not financially well off, and is not in a position to afford the treatment, which will cost a few lacs of rupees. The doctors have estimated the cost of her treatment to be Rs 5 lac, which is beyond Oswald's means.

Hence, philanthropists, donors, organisations and individuals, are requested to come forward and help Oswald financially or in any way possible.
