Insulting with 'Reward'? Firemen at Air Crash Site Get Just Rs 100 from Govt!

Insulting with 'Reward'? Firemen at Air Crash Site Get Just Rs 100 from Govt!

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangalore

Mangalore, Apr 19: When it comes to rewarding the right people with the right amount, India seems to be sinking to a new low. We are a nation bereft of heroes, but when we do find them occasionally, we choose to look the other way and get done with the ‘awarding’ part as if it were a burden rather than a pleasure to give recognition where its due.

A few days back we had highlighted the plight of volleyball player Arunima Sinha who lost her leg after she was pushed off the train by three robbers. She was given Rs 25,000 as in-gratia and Rs 2,00,000 followed it the next day. But compare that with the crores that each player received after winning the cricket World Cup, and the apathy is evident.

And now we have an instance that shocks us even more. Our brave firefighters, who worked non-stop at the 2010 Mangalore air crash site for 12 long hours for over 5 days, even managing to save eight lives and recovering all 158 bodies, have been ‘rewarded’ Rs 100 for their bravery. Is this a joke, you wonder.

Yes, it’s cruel joke to play on people who put their own lives at stake to save strangers, who went without food and water and put up with suffocating smoke, debris and the sight of utter human agony and distress. It is not just an immense physical strength and stamina that was required, but also an extraordinary willpower to keep going mentally when all around there was only death and destruction.

Our firefighters showed an astonishing amount of courage in that situation, and all they get for their relentless efforts is a less-than-meagre Rs 100. And some of them get a little more – Rs 140. Wish we could send our politicians to do what these heroes had done. Not even a single neta would have even gone to the site.

Not only that, the reward comes a whole 11 months after it was first promised by chief minister Yeddyurappa who at that time had asserted that he would reward each of them ‘suitably’. Is this a suitable reward? We don’t need to be rocket scientists to judge that.

It would have been better if they had been given only plaques commending their efforts, without the insult of ‘bestowing’ an amount that would not even meet their auto expense to go to the district treasury, from where they have been asked to collect the money. It is matter of great shame that even in this age and era, our politicians think nothing of rewarding the bravehearts with just Rs 100, while their own coffers are filled with hundreds of crores.

Joseph F. Gonsalves, Bannur, Puttur / Mangalore, I agree with you, Christians have really increased about 10% to 12% from 2% in the past even in northern states many are converting to Christianity. When you stop a child from eating chocolate or from doing something, definitely child will be more curious to know why it is so? When RSS, SS, VHP, BD, Cigarette are attacking Christians and not allowing them to live peacefully, naturally many curious Hindus like to know what Christianity is all about? They try to learn more, want to know more about Christianity and once they come to know the teachings Jesus they immediately accept it Christianity, all their confusion he will stop there. They will come to know who is real God, and for whom they where wandering place to place since many years. Their prayers are heard. All their poverty n headaches are reduced. Actually these fanatics are spreading Christianity more than Christian missionaries. God bless Bajrang Dal.

I might be just out of school to understand the language of politics which you are talking about. But my school taught me a commitment is a commitment which needs to be honoured at any cost. Yeddy should have been in a much better position to understand the justifications provided by you to support him before making any commitments. The pittance of rupees 100 can never be taken as a suitable reward for the valiant efforts which any non-school goer can also understand. Hope u too understand.

Mr. Amarpreet Khosla, Malliggekatte/Sankarapura, Thank you very much for reading my comments.
One thing I like to bring to your notice that REWARDS and GIFTS are two different things. If some one gives me a gift worth of even one paisa [there is NO value in market but in love it is very valuable] I will be glad because it is love. But rewards should be given in right way. Can a person survive with hundred rupees for one day? I bet at present situation it is IMPOSSIBLLE. The person who allocated this amount as a reward must think before he signs the paper and it is not the person’s honesty or sincerity.

Fire fighters deserve only Rs100 because they are not cricketers or film stars. The life of cricketers is much more valuable than fire fighters as they they provide daily bread to the families of huge number of persons involved in betting. Fire fighters only save lives during emergency and they are not celebreties to pay huge amount.

Why is that our govt. (rather the politicians) only think about filling thier pockets ? Its a pity that we have such govt. in india, who hardly respects the efforts of the fire fighters. Then why should we defend our country from intruders ?? Its better to put the country in the hands of terrorist. However the issue if highlighted might enligthen the people who can think rightly when they vote for such irresponsible people. The nation is great but the nationals poor. WE ARE BOOSTING OURSELVES ABOUT WORLD CLASS. NOT EVEN A SINGLE HELICOPTER WAS UTILIZED TO TRANSPORT THE INJURED TO HOSPITALS. Only we found was ambulances freely provided by the hospitals because they get business.

Guys, not a single Fire fighter was from Veera Shaiva community, and sholuls not expect higher reward. Our present govt. is run by Veera shaiva community because only that community voted for the present govt., during election. So all donations, help aid belongs to that group. So please don’t blame Yeddy for the same. Rather blame Italian mam, Amul baby. In the last Veera Shaiva Sammelana, while opening the Hall (he built with his own money, HDK plz excuse) Yeddy told clearly he is not afraid of any one in his party, All Veera Shaiva should be united to curb any dissident activity from backward class MLA’s. Jai ho Yeddy. For yeddy Fire fighters have done their duty. No need of any recognition. By the way Rs.100 is not a small amount you can have full lunch. Nowadays everyone is expecting crores as gift same as our world cup cricket hero's.
