Mangalore, Nov 3: “It is indeed sad to note that a ‘Dharmadhikari’ is trying to trample ‘dharma rakshaks (protectors of the religion). The CID report with regard to the rape and murder of Sowjanya is false and the officials have connived with the powerful in hiding the crime of the real culprits. But we are not going to be disheartened and we are not going to stop our fight. We want nothing but CBI enquiry which should be done under the supervision of the Supreme Court judge. We are even ready to shed our blood in bringing justice to Sowjanya and her family,” thundered Mahesh Shetty Thimarodi, Hindu leader and president of Beltangady Democratic Forum.
He was addressing a public rally organized by the Mulky Civic Forum near Lalit Mahal on NH 66 here on Saturday November 2.
He blamed the police for acting on behalf of the culprits and shielding them. “In the past there have been numerous Sowjanya-like cases that have taken place in Dharmasthala and not a single one of them has ever been solved. The ‘powerful’ ones of the Dharmasthala are hand-in-glove with the culprits and the police and hence every such case goes unnoticed as no one dares to speak out against this ‘powerhouse’ of Dharmasthala. However we shall not allow anyone to trample truth and get away with crime hereafter. The culprits should be punished. We cannot tolerate these atrocities anymore. We are with the truth and we know that Annappa Swamy of Dharmasthala is with us and will protect us always,” he added.
Esha Vittaladas Swamiji of Sandipani Sadhanashrama, Kemar made it clear that the ongoing protest is against the corrupt officials and the real culprits, and not against any individual or religious place. "But if efforts are made to sabotage these protests, the people would surely answer in their own way," he said.
Deceased Sowjanya’s mother Kusumavati too addressed the gathering and said that supporters of the real culprits are following them everywhere and are mentally harassing them for seeking justice for Sowjanya. “What wrong have we done? We just want justice. We do not want anyone else to face Sowjanya’s fate. Hence we need your support and with your support we shall fight it out till the end,” she said.
Civic Forum president Vinod Salian welcomed the gathering and delivered the keynote address while Naveen Bappanadu proposed the vote of thanks. Umesh Manapady compered.
Sowjanya’s father Chandappa Gowda too was present at the rally.
The shops in Mulky and surrounding areas pulled their shutters down voluntarily to express their solidarity with the protesters while rickshaw and taxi drivers too stayed off the roads.
The CID in its preliminary report is understood to have named Santosh Rao, who was arrested soon after the incident last year, as the accused in the case, while giving clean chit to Nischal Jain, nephew of Dr D Veerendra Heggade and three others named by Sowjanya's parents and some locals. Sowjanya was found raped and murdered near Dharmasthala last October.
