Criminal case registered against Chikkamagaluru bishop on land issue

Daijiworld Media Network – Chikkamagaluru

Chikkamagaluru, Aug 29: A case was registered against Bishop of Chikkamagaluru diocese Dr T Anthony Swamy and diocese priest Fr A Shantharaj for allegedly attempting to sell a land reserved to build hostel for St Joseph’s Boys High School. The land belongs to St Joseph’s Educational Society. Dr T Anthony Swamy is the president of the society and Fr Shantharaj was the vice-president.

Earlier Christian community members of 46 churches of the diocese had demanded probe for alleged irregularities regarding lands pertaining to St Joseph Educational Society.

Now the case was registered in Chikkamagaluru town police station under the instructions from the court.

The complaint says that wrong information was given to competent land authorities to sell the land by producing incorrect documents. The case has been registered under IPC 34 and 406.

The complaint says that the society was registered under Societies Act to provide education to the marginalized.

Michael Baptist, who held the press meet here on Thursday, August 29, informed that the he is also the member of the Society and he was not taken into confidence in any matter regarding the sale. He informed that apart from president and vice-president there are other 6 members who were kept in the dark regarding sale attempts.

The 20 guntas land was donated by F G H Fernandes in 1984 for the purpose of building a hostel for the students.

An attempt was also made to sell another 20 guntas of land standing in the name of St Joseph’s Boys High School. The market value of these both lands stands at around Rs 18 crore.

Michael Baptist has mentioned in the complaint that as per church laws any land worth above Rs 1 crore cannot be sold without consent from Pope.

Michael alleged that when the bishop and the priest do not have any right to sell or negotiate to sell any land without the consent of all the members of the society, they took Rs 40 lacs advance which was illegal as well as unethical. He said that other 6 members stopped the deal and the illegal transfer was averted.

Along with Michael S Baptist , the parishioners Stany D Silva, Hezine Quardros, Nelson D Silva and Sylvester Saldana were present at the press meet.

If any of you has a dispute with another, do you dare to take it before the ungodly for judgment instead of before the Lord’s people? 2 Or do you not know that the Lord’s people will judge the world? And if you are to judge the world, are you not competent to judge trivial cases?

This is definitely not an isolated case.... but certainly, the tip of an iceberg !!!!!!! The Bishop's, clergy, are habitual offenders....... They scrupulously, sell donated land, by parishioners, even Church assets and quietly pocket away, the loot....This is a chronic epidemic, in Mumbai too !!!!!!! Prime land, has been sold to builders, leaving parishoners high and dry !! When confronted, they gang up with cooked up stooges, to insult and threaten, all those who demand, accountability !!!!!! Tragic, disgusting and sick episodes, happening within the hallowed walls of the Church !!!!!!!

This sort of greed at epidemic levels among consecrated people of many faiths is evident and the causes even. Business training and study for religious is superfluous under vows. People give much value and respect to these supposedly holy. A definite measured moving away from worship, personal prayer and spirituality is advancing. Men and women in the religious clothing project higher demand for material/luxury and CEO image; the holy and humble human to serve GOD, is lost. This is confirmed in the increasing criminal cases that are booked all over the world against so called holy men/women, for swindling money, property valuables, Cheating, Sex cases and murder..........and more. Why not give proper room and place to well deserving people, not under vows to manage institutions and let these greats pray and serve GOD? Time all people take heed and understand.

The Christian community must appointment professional to manage businesses activities of the church. The priest should involve in spiritual activities. But priest are like CEO and church is a mall. Infact in every church there is small coterie who guide the priest and when their interest is not fulfilled they revolt against the church and go to any level to demoralise the church. Community is needed to safeguard these bad work and they are expert to convince things I the name of God.this practice is of past present and future. So be aware this community in Christian community

    Teach them
10th commandment if they dint know

Thou shalt not covet thy neighbor’s goods.”

The Tenth Commandment forbids the wanting to or taking someone else’s property. Along with the Seventh Commandment, this commandment condemns theft and the feelings of envy, greed, and jealousy in reaction to what other people have.
