Udupi, Oct 10: An ancient inscription of a snake God was found at the Nagabana near the Mahakali temple, Kaiyarla, Karkala taluk, said T Murugeshi, the co-professor of the department of history and archaeology at MSRS College, Shirva.
The rectangle shaped rock has four sacred knots below it. The picture of Nagaraja, king of the snakes is carved on it. It appears that the two snakes that have raised their heads have been caught by the Nagaraja in two of his hands behind.
Nagaraja has a stick in the right hand and a head in the other hand. The pictures of snake girls who have caught the snake that have raised their hood are etched on both the sides of the rock.
The umbrella shaped cobra with five hoods is on the head of Kalabhairava. Janivara and Arepanche are also found decorated.
The Jain inscriptions dates back to 14th or 15th century. Temple priests Kiran Chouta, management officer Chandrahasa Chowta, students Sreyas, Karthik, Gowtham and Dishanth have cooperated in the study of these inscriptions.
