Beltangady, May 6: Shalini (30), daughter of Anni Shetty from Perindile Mane in Laila village in the taluk, and wife of Taranath Shetty from Gujjottu House of Gardadi village in the taluk, was murdered on Tuesday May 3. Taranath Shetty, who works as the manager of a canteen in Thane, had set up his family at his flat in Nallasopara in Mumbai.
Taranath leaves home early in the morning, and comes home at around 10 pm. On Tuesday May 3 evening, he called up his home, but his wife did not respond. Growing suspicious, he came home and saw that his wife was lying dead. The front door of the flat was open, and the television set was on. Shalini had been killed by smothering her, and gold ornaments kept in the almirah had gone missing. He also saw that there was lime juice in a glass, apart from some eatables in a plate. This gave rise to the suspicion that some known person had visited his home, and had killed Shalini by strangling when she turned towards the kitchen.
With the help of neighbours, the concerned were informed and people from here went to Mumbai by hiring a vehicle. Although post mortem reports said that the death had occurred due to cardiac arrest, there are strong indications that she had been murdered. Those who killed her had taken away ornaments kept in the almirah, but not those she wore. This has given rise to suspicion that ornaments were taken away to create a doubt in the minds of family members that the murder had been committed for gain.
Shalini’s body was brought to her native place on Thursday evening, and funeral was conducted immediately thereafter. Shalini’s second marriage anniversary was to be celebrated on May 9, and Taranath’s brother Shekhar’s marriage was to be solemnized on May 9. Shalini was to come home by bus to her village on May 8 for attending this marriage. It is learnt that she was four months pregnant when her end came.
