Udupi: Mescom shocks consumers, sends additional bill over 'faulty' meter reading

Daijiworld Media Network – Udupi (MS)

Udupi, Nov 5: The Mescom has given shock to its consumers to pay up pending electricity bills within 30 days. It stated that due to faulty electricity meter reading, the earlier bills given were not proper.

Consumers are frustrated and say, “Every month, electricity bill arrives and we pay promptly. If bill payment is delayed by two months, Mescom takes off the connection. Though electricity is not provided during rain and wind, bill is always the same. Now they are resorting to additional charges from consumers. This is not right.”

Mescom has sent bills to various consumers and the matter says, “As the electricity meter reading was faulty during July to September, the electricity bill is revised based on the average units you have consumed. So you need to pay the pending within 30 days. Some have received Rs 2000, while others have got Rs 3000 to Rs 4000 bill. The letter also says that the consumers can file objection within 15 days in writing.”

Consumers say, “Why the Mescom personnel who does the meter reading every month, did not inform about the meter fault since three months? Without advising to change the meter or the faulty reading the Mescom has suddenly sent additional bill. This is not right.”

One Mescom official said, “In many houses the electricity meters are faulty. We have written letter to higher authorities to supply new meters. But they have not yet supplied. So some people have to pay additional bill due to faulty meter reading for the past three months. We have sent letter in this regard. We have sent the bill on the basis of average units they have consumed earlier. This issue might prevail till we receive new meters. It is not possible to say that this problem is faced by everyone.”

MESCOM uploads my bill online after the 8th of every month. Because of this I am unable to pay the bill online before the 8th of every month. How can I punish MESCOM for this delay? Is there any way to fine them for this delay.

Mescom is the only power company which is charging heavily with very bad power supply. It's my experience since childhood that's over 6 decades that there are frequent powercuts on regular basis. In the rainy season worst is that the power is cut just on the appearance of clouds and not the rain. The power cables are hanging dangerously overhead and putting us in shame when our family members from other places/outside the country visit us on this power situation. Definitely there appears to be lot of corruption in this entire issue of power generation and supply. Local elected representatives too aren't bothered of the seriousness of the situation, maybe they get their cut too.

These Mescom people are totally inefficient while dealing with consumers grievances. They know they have done mistakes and they are responsible for it, so, they keep mum because they know the consumers can not do anything. Then damage and loss happens to consumers. But these Mescom personnel are powerful right from lineman to above. This is the fate of consumers.

Mescom is a monopolist. If other companies are there ,they have no chance. Now mescom should come and check all meters and replace where it is needed. They are suppose to change the Meter every atleast five or ten years.Due to better types or changes ,they cant relay on old ones.First file immediately case against their faulty reading on them not on Meter Owners.Hundred years old meters are still there .

Just because they're monopoly in entire Karnataka they think they can dictate rules. This is bullshit. They are looting. If you protest, they say first pay and then protest to avoid termination of power supply. In Bombay, we have different electricity companies whose networks cater to supply and distribution of electricity to various zones. MSEB (Maharashtra State Electricity Board is a major electricity supplier to the eastern suburbs and entire Maharashtra) BEST (Bombay Electricity Supply and Transport Undertaking) to downtown South Bombay and Adani (formerly BSES) to the western suburbs. I wish unlike MESCOM, there should have been privatisation as is the case in Bombay. There will then be parity, transparency and healthy competition. Moreover people will be more than happy to get value added services. Atleast the backbone of MESCOM due to its tyranny and dictatorship will be dislocated and consumers can heave a sigh of relief. Whether its a possibility seems to be seen in the distant future.

Its blatantly open and legal public loot. Why not pass a legislation 40% cut on top of real value + GST + VAT + user development fee. Its time to legalize corruption.
