Mangaluru: 'Sarathi No 1' award winning auto rickshaw driver Monthu Lobo passes away at 86

Daijiworld Media Network – Mangaluru

Mangaluru, Nov 5: Monthu Lobo, an auto rickshaw driver and an avid philanthropist, passed away on Saturday November 5. He was 86.

Hailing from Valencia parish, Lobo, a zealous auto driver, was an example to his colleagues. He rendered his service to society for after work.

Known for his selfless service and social work, Lobo was presented the 'Sarathi No 1' award from the Indian Vehicles Drivers Trade Union in 2012. He was adjudged the best driver of the year on World Drivers Day held at Sri Puttana Chetty Town Hall in Bengaluru.

Lobo used to run his auto from Kankanady junction. He was a social worker who has shown his sincerity through his work and service to the needy. His work included providing water taps to areas which are in need of it, water taps to schools, hospitals, computers to schools, uniforms to needy school children, sandals, clothes and even eatables to orphanages and needy children in Mangaluru and even other far off places.

Serving as an auto driver for more than half a century, and he had not faced not even a single instance of police case or accident. Recognizing his unique feat he was felicitated by the RTO and the district administration in 2008, by the then deputy commissioner Mahesh Rao. He got his driving license way back in 1957, and was one of the first auto drivers in the city to get licence.

Heartfelt condolences to all the Family members of Mr Montu Lobo. A truly inspiring personality. I came to know about him when I travelled in his auto a few years ago. Was overwhelmed to hear the stories and the help he had been able to generate to the needy students, schools and organisations through the people who travelled in his auto. I had opportunity to travel a few more times there after. God works in mysterious ways and Mr Montu Lobo was such an example. Though he had limited resources, it didn't stop him from helping and became an instrument for the public to motivate & reach out to the needy. May his soul rest in eternal peace 🙏 God will surely welcome him in open arms for his wonderful work here on earth.
