Mangaluru: Pregnant woman given new lease of life at Lady Goschen Hospital

Mangaluru, Sep 28: Government Lady Goschen Hospital, which has carved a niche for itself in the healthcare sector through its socially oriented and women-centric services, has given a new lease of life to a woman who was in a life-and-death situation after a private hospital had reportedly given up hope.

A 33-week pregnant woman had been admitted to a private hospital in Udupi district due to antepartum haemorrhage (bleeding before childbirth). An ultrasound examination revealed that the placenta was positioned across the passage through which the baby would normally be delivered from the mother’s womb. This condition carries the risk of injuries to the urinary bladder, small intestine and large intestine. In such circumstances, surgical removal of the uterus itself becomes inevitable.

Since the loss of around three to four litres of precious blood can occur, saving the life of such a pregnant patient becomes a major challenge. This is also the situation in which the risk of maternal death is highest. However, mothers have been saved from such life-threatening situations through a life-saving procedure implemented at Lady Goschen Hospital over the past one-and-a-half years.

As various organs can become affected in such cases, specialists concerned with those organs as well as super-speciality experts are called to the operation theatre in advance, and the surgery is performed in their presence. This procedure has been implemented at Lady Goschen Hospital as a special initiative conceptualised by its medical superintendent, Dr Durgaprasad M R, with the aim of minimising every drop of blood lost from the pregnant woman’s body.

Prof Dr Nikhil Shetty of the KMC Department of Obstetrics played a major role in making timely decisions during the procedure and served as the chief obstetric surgeon. Senior resident Dr Susham Shetty, assistant professors Dr Gagan Deep Kaur and Dr Prithvi Shenoy, and junior resident Dr Tanvitha assisted in the procedure.

KMC’s Dr Pramod, Dr Meet and Dr Shivanand provided four continuous hours of surgical care and gave a new form of pre-treatment to the completely injured urinary bladder. KMC anaesthetist Dr Shilpa continuously monitored the patient’s vital parameters throughout the surgery.

Before the premature baby was shifted to the neonatal department, paediatrician Dr Aarushi provided the necessary emergency care. Nurse Deepa provided timely assistance during the procedure.
