Udupi, Nov14: The Department of Endocrinology of Kasturba Medical College and Hospital, Manipal had organised Mega Diabetic Health Awareness exhibition and free diabetic screening camp on Monday, November 14. The theme for the year is “Education to Protect Tomorrow.” World Diabetes Day provides an opportunity to raise awareness of diabetes as a global public health issue and what needs to be done, collectively and individually, dfor better prevention, diagnosis and management of the condition. On this occasion, free screening of blood sugar and BP and physical examination for the public and launched Patient Diabetes Self-management Diary. The program has benefited more than 5000 people.
MAHE Manipal pro chancellor, Dr H S Ballal inaugurated the Mega Diabetic Awareness Exhibition and Diabetic Screening camp. In his presidential address, he said, “India is known as the world capital of diabetes. This disease is called silent killer and affects all organs of the body, if unattended. Hence, creating the awareness amongst the public about this disease is necessary and Kasturba Hospital, Manipal is doing their bit through this program. Hope this benefits the needy in a good way.”
Vice chancellor, Lt Gen (Dr) M D Venkatesh Launched the Patient Diabetes self-management Diary and said, “In India around 8 crore people and in the world around 60 crore people are suffering from diabetes. Only consultants cannot prevent this disease, everyone needs know about this and practice the better health routine to avoid this or maintain the disease. This awareness program is designed to create this kind of awareness in the general public.”
Dr Arun G Maiya, dean, Manipal College of Health Professions, MAHE, Manipal, who was the guest of honour of the program, said that, "Manipal College of Health Professional and KMC, Manipal has developed a simple protocol for the biomechanical analysis for the diabetic patient and foot, which will help in analyzing the condition better.”
Dr Sharath Kumar K Rao, dean, Kasturba Medical College, Manipal welcomed the gathering and Dr Avinash Shetty, medical superintendent, Kasturba Hospital Manipal proposed a vote of thanks. Dr Anand Venugopal, COO, Teaching Hospital, MAHE, Manipal was present. Dr Sahana Shetty, HoD of Endocrinology gave an overview on Diabetes Day and Mega Diabetic Awareness Exhibition program. On this occasion, prizes were distributed to the winners of Poster and Quiz Competition on Diabetes.
