Mangaluru, Nov 14: Traffic violators can now pay penalty at post offices in the city. The Mangaluru City Police and the Department of Posts, Mangaluru Division have taken a joint initiative here in this direction on November 14, Monday.

Police commissioner N Shashikumar signed an agreement with Shriharsha N, IPOs, senior superintendent of post offices, Mangaluru postal division for introducing the facility of payment of traffic violation penalty under Mangaluru Police Commissionerate jurisdiction at post offices.

Through this initiative, the traffic violators need not go to court to make the payment to get their vehicle released.

“Today we have released the posters of the payment for traffic violations that can be made at any post office in Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts. This system has made it easy for people to pay traffic violation fines. Payment can be made at the post office counters in cash or through QR code scanning,” Police Commissioner Shashi Kumar said in a press statement.

“At present, the facility of paying fines for traffic violations under the jurisdiction of Mangaluru Police Commissionerate is available only online and at 4 local Traffic Police Stations (Traffic East Police Station, Kadri, Traffic West Police Station, Pandeshwar, Traffic North Police Station, Surathkal and Traffic South Police Station, Nagori) and 4 Mangaluru One Centers (Mallikatte, Lalbagh, Bavutagudde and Surathkal). But henceforth this facility will be extended to all head and sub-post offices of Karnataka,” Shriharsha said in a statement.

Shriharsha further stated, “Nowadays the information of the traffic rules violating vehicles is available instantly through the automation centre which was started to control those who don’t wear helmets, seat belt, triple ride and those who drive with defective number plates.

Due to this, notices are being issued to the owners of those vehicles who have violated the traffic rules. Fine has to be paid by the owner of such vehicles within seven days of the notice.

If a vehicle registered in any other city of Karnataka comes to Mangaluru and violates the traffic rules, a notice will be sent to them. Since it is very difficult for them to come to Mangaluru and pay the fine and enable such vehicle owners to pay the fine at the nearest post office.

Henceforth fines for violation of traffic rules under the jurisdiction of Mangaluru Police Commissionerate can be paid by cash or through QR code scanning at 1702 departmental post offices in Karnataka including 126 post offices of Dakshina Kannada and 62 post offices of Udupi District.”

Fines for traffic violations received under the ePayment service at post offices will be instantly transmitted online to the Mangaluru City Police server through API integration.

The details of applicable service charges for this facility offered at the office are as follows:

The service charges (including GST) for traffic violation fee amount of Rs 1,000, Rs 1,001-2,500, Rs 2501-5000 and above Rs 5,000 will be Rs 10, Rs 15, Rs 20 and Rs 25 respectively.

Shriharsha also stated, “To pay the traffic violation fee at the post offices, the customer has to bring the Traffic violation fine challan. However, if it is not brought, the customer can tell the registration number of the vehicle that violated the traffic rules and pay the penalty fee.

If more than one notice has been issued to the vehicle owner for violating the traffic rules and if the customer does not bring his old notice or has lost it, the customer can obtain the details of such notices from post offices by giving the vehicle registration number and pay the penalty fee for all or some of the outstanding notices.

Apart from this, customers can check at the post offices whether there is any penalty charge on the vehicles at the time of sale which can be paid immediately”.

This service is available at 1702 departmental Post Offices of Karnataka from November 14, and hence the customers are hereby requested to make use of the facility, the statement said.

DCP Law and Order Anshu Kumar, ACP Traffic Geetha Kulkarni, and Shriharsha, IPoS Senior Superintendent of Post office Mangaluru Division and Shrinath N B, Assistant Superintendent of Post offices, Mangaluru were present.
