Kasargod, Nov 19: Panchayat officials have called upon citizens to take precautions against conjunctivitis eye infections which are on the rise in the border areas of Manjeshwara, Meenja and Varkaadi.

People have been warned of restricting their movement in the border areas and exercise restraint and caution as cases of conjunctivitis eye infections are rising in Karnataka.

Various festivals, school day functions and annual day celebrations are being held in Manjeshwara and its surroundings and so people affected by the eye infection have been requested to stay indoors and at home by the panchayat members. Those affected by the infection have been instructed to visit the primary health centres to get eye drops administered from the medical authorities.

Meanwhile in Belthangady, at least 20 to 30 cases of conjunctivitis eye infections are being reported on a daily basis in the taluk hospitals.

Those affected include students, traders and businessmen as a result of which the infection is spreading rapidly. Children have been told to stay at home until they get cleared of the infection and also if they contract the infection or complain of irritation or redness in their eyes which is one of the common symptoms. Though the eye infection is not dangerous or fatal, citizens have been asked to take precautionary measures and visit the hospital for medication if symptoms show up.

Eye specialist Dr Shilpa who works in the government hospital of the taluk said the doctors will visit schools to administer eye drops.
