Mangaluru, Nov 25: Chemical waste that was dumped in a scrap yard near Katla Cross of Surathkal caught fire on Thursday November 24.

Residents living in nearby apartments and houses put their efforts in bringing the fire under control. On a private yard that is in the midst of apartments, empty chemical drums were brought and were broken into pieces. Though an objection was raised by the residents living nearby and a complaint was given to the city corporation, the work continued unabated. The particles of chemicals used to fly inside the apartments and houses. In addition, mosquito menace increased as water was always logged on the yard area.

The pile of waste chemicals suddenly caught fire and the apartment was filled with poisonous smoke. All residents had to rush out to the open area. Local corporator Saritha Shashidhar arrived on the spot and instructed the yard owner to pay for the damage to the cable. The corporator also assured that the yard will be shifted from the present spot.
