Mangalore: Copious Rains Soak Coast – Lightning Claims a Life

Mangalore, May 18: A large number of places within Udupi and Dakshina Kannada districts received good rains coupled with lightning, wind and thunder, on Tuesday evening and night. The city and surrounding places received rains since late evening on Tuesday till May 18 morning.
While Subrahmanya in Sullia taluk experienced heavy rain and gale on Tuesday evening for nearly three hours, Beltangady and Dharmasthala registered normal rains. A large number of trees and electric poles got uprooted. Almost the entire Karkala taluk too got good rains.
A person named Subhas Poojary (30), resident of Kolya House in Yarlapady village in Karkala taluk lost his life on Tuesday evening, after lightning struck him. Reportedly, he was standing in the courtyard of his parental home when tragedy struck. He was a truck driver by profession, and has left behind wife and a recently-born baby. Poojary’s father, Sheena Poojary, had died on May 14, and Subhas, who lived separately, had come to his parental home because of his father’s death, it is learnt. Subhas, who was a popular figure in social circles, was the only bread winner of his family. He had got a baby about a month back after many years since his marriage. His wife was away at her parents’ home on account of her recent delivery.
Tahsildar, Jagannath Rao, and revenue officer, K P Nayak, visited the spot.
Sullia taluk also received rain, strong winds, and lightning, on Tuesday evening. A falling branch inflicted loss of around Rs 50,000 to Medappa from Arantodu Uluvaru, the roof of whose house was damaged in the incident. Uppinangady and surrounding villages in Puttur taluk also got rains.
