Mangaluru/Udupi, Sep 25: The coastal districts of Dakshina Kannada and Udupi experienced good rainfall over the past 24 hours, bringing much-needed relief to residents who had been reeling under sweltering heat for the last couple of weeks.

The meteorological department has attributed this sudden shift in weather patterns over the Arabian Sea region to a depression formed in the Bay of Bengal. The department has also predicted good rainfall across the state, including the coastal belt, for the next four to five days.

In Dakshina Kannada, many parts, particularly Mangaluru city, Ullal, Bantwal, Dharmasthala, Konaje, Deralakatte, and Surathkal, experienced good showers from Thursday morning until the evening. The district had been witnessing intense heat for the past two to three weeks, with the maximum temperature touching 33.7 degrees Celsius. Following the scattered showers on Thursday, the maximum temperature dropped significantly to 30.1 degrees Celsius, while the minimum temperature was recorded at 23.4 degrees Celsius.

In the neighbouring Udupi district, the impact of the depression was most prominent in the Byndoor and Kundapur taluks. Over the last 24 hours, Byndoor recorded the highest rainfall at 82.9 mm, closely followed by Kundapur with 73.9 mm. Hebri received moderate rainfall of 45.1 mm. However, other parts of the district recorded relatively sparse showers, with Brahmavar receiving 14.9 mm, Udupi 3.5 mm, Karkala 2.5 mm, and Kaup 0.3 mm.

While several parts of the Udupi district received good rain on Friday morning, the showers eventually subsided, leaving behind a cloudy atmosphere throughout the day. The overcast conditions and the rainfall have significantly brought down the scorching heat, offering a sigh of relief to the people across the twin districts.
