Mangaluru: Currency notes found by drunkard - Statement of mechanic, police differ

Daijiworld Media Network – Mangaluru (MS)

Mangaluru, Dec 7: The matter pertaining to the exact amount of currency notes that were found by a drunkard mechanic near Pumpwell has created curiosity.

According to the drunkard, there were several bundles of Rs 500 and Rs 2000 and he says it must be between Rs five to ten lac. However, the police claim that only Rs 49,000 was in the bag.

So far the owner of the bag has not been identified and no one has come forward claiming the money.

The drunkard, who found the money bag, works in a bus. He said, “A box containing currency notes was lying near Pumpwell bus stand. I have not counted the amount. It must be around Rs five to 10 lac. I took two currency notes of Rs 500 face value. I had liquor along with one more stranger with that money. I gave one bundle of currency note to that unknown person.

“I have told the police that this money was not stolen but found on road. If any contact number was there in the box, I would have returned the money. I do not want this kind of money at all. I would not have taken it to home also. I work in a bus. That is enough for me,” he said.

Defending that the amount available is only Rs 49,000, Kankanady police station personnel said, “According to the claim made by the person who had the money in his possession, the box did not contain Rs ten lac. We have counted the money in the presence of public. We also have video recording of the same. The box had only Rs 49,000 in it. The person who had the money in his possession said that he got the same in the bus stand. Information will be given to the court about the matter and cash and further process will be done as per court’s order.”

This amount was the commission paid to the "Leader" by the toll booth guys at Surathkal. Unfortunately, they had to close down the toll gate and hence the money was returned. The hard proof is that nobody has claimed the bag. How could they?

The crux of the matter is anyone come forward to claim the money will put himself under the clutches of the laws of the land - it will become incumbent upon the claimant to prove about the legitimacy of the money (possession of high amount of cash now a days come under the taxman's lens) its a head ache beyond INR 10 lacs..., that too at a time when NIA team is very vigilant in & around m'lore....

Perhaps it will come out that this was demonetized currency, no one suspected it and accepted it as real cash when the drunkard paid out of the bundle and gave to his fellow bottle buddy.
