Mangaluru, Dec 10: The construction work of fourth and fifth island type platforms is in progress at Central railway station of the city.
The work of levelling and wall erection of platform is almost complete. Tiling, roof and foot overbridge work is pending. The platforms will be ready for use during February 2023, according to Palakkad division public relation officer of railways M K Gopinathan.
The construction work of the platforms began in May 2022 due to the long-standing demand of railway passengers of coastal region. New platforms will be 540 meter in length and 10 meters wide. The total cost of project is Rs 4.5 crore. These platforms do not have direct road access. They need to be accessed through foot over bridge from other platforms. First, second and third platforms of central railway station that have direct road access are not island type platforms.
Two mammoth banyan trees that were 50 and 20 years old were shifted to make space for the construction recently under the guidance of environmentalist Jeeth Milan Roche. The trees were shifted and planted at a distance of 200 meters from the original spot with the use of cranes, ultra-modern machinery, personnel of railway department and environmentalists.
