Mumbai, May 24 (PTI) Maharashtra government is planning to bring a legislation to check circulation of spurious seeds that cause losses to farmers, Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan said today.
"Due to bogus seeds, farmers have to face a loss. Till now, if the seeds were found to be bogus then farmers were compensated the amount equal to that of the seeds," Chavan said.
"The government is contemplating to bring in a legislation to compensate the losses considering the production," he said in the state Kharif crop review meeting held today.
Asserting that agriculture sector is needed to be lifted up for development of the state, Chavan said that more than 80 per cent of farming is rain-fed and there is a need to develop it.
Due to unseasonal rainfall farming was affected on a large scale therefore the government is mulling over to insure crops, Chavan added.
