Madikeri: Dowry Menace – Woman Torched, Succumbs to Injuries

Madikeri, May 25: A woman named Absat (25) from Kuniganahalli in Hassan district died in a hospital of burn injuries. Her relatives have accused her husband of causing her death.

Absat, daughter of B V Adam and Ameena from Kagadikuppa in the district, was married off to Sulaiman from Kuniganahalli. Reportedly, Sulaiman had been pestering her for dowry regularly since their marriage.

He wanted to build a new house, and had asked Absat to bring money from her parents. After she refused, the two fought over the issue on Monday May 23, it is reported. As she expressed her desire to go back to her parental home, Sulaiman reportedly dragged her into his house, poured kerosene on her body, and ignited a flame. Critically injured Absat was admitted into a hospital on Monday night by her parents. She breathed her last on Tuesday afternoon of burn injuries.

On the basis of a complaint filed by the relatives of the deceased, Sakleshpur police have arrested Sulaiman. Investigation has been taken up by them.

    I think there is a reverse dowry system exists in muslims in Arab countries, that is boy will pay dowry to the parents of the girl.But in India they follow hindu dowry custom only. Why is this so.
