Bengaluru, Sep 12: In a major push toward a seamless, cashless public transit network, Bengaluru commuters can now hop between the city’s underground rails and surface buses using a single payment card or smartphone application.
The Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) has officially activated system-wide support for the RBL Bank National Common Mobility Card (NCMC)—originally issued for Bengaluru Metro journeys—on its bus fleet. Concurrently, transport authorities unveiled Namma BMTC Mobile App 2.0, a unified digital platform designed to merge bus and Metro transit management into a single interface.
Bridging the transit gap
The integration of the NCMC standard—a nationwide interoperable payment framework—aims to eliminate the friction of maintaining separate tickets across different modes of travel. Under the new rollout, a single card enables commuters to seamlessly switch between BMRCL Metro lines and BMTC buses.

The technological upgrade arrives after significant anticipation. The NCMC rollout faced initial delays past its target timeframe, an issue highlighted in an earlier Moneycontrol report on 24 August titled 'From mobility card delays to glitchy tracking, why Bengaluru's BMTC is falling behind on tech'.
High-profile launch at Vidhana Soudha
The upgraded digital platform was formally launched on Thursday at Vidhana Soudha by chief minister D K Shivakumar, accompanied by deputy chief minister G Parameshwara and transport minister B S Suresh.
The application serves as a comprehensive transit hub, allowing passengers to:
Plan multimodal routes: Enter origins and destinations to generate integrated journey options combining Metro routes and bus lines.
Access live telematics: View real-time GPS locations of buses, accurate estimated arrival times (ETAs), stop-by-stop schedules, and nearby transit hubs.
Purchase unified ticketing: Instantly generate BMTC digital bus tickets and BMRCL Metro QR tickets.
Manage commuter passes: Secure daily and monthly pass options directly on-device, including the Vistara Pass, Vajra Gold Pass, General Vistara Pass, Vayu Vajra Pass, and NICE Road Pass.
Cashless and localised
To ensure accessibility, Namma BMTC 2.0 supports full bilingual operation in Kannada and English, rendering stop names, navigation labels, and transaction receipts in the local language. Transactions can be settled through instant digital payment channels, including UPI frameworks and mobile wallets, complete with historical receipt archives.
BMTC officials confirmed that the initiatives are intended to build an interconnected, passenger-centric transit ecosystem. The upgraded application is currently available for download via the Google Play Store under the title Namma BMTC 2.0.
