Boy bitten by snake dies due to long ambulance wait in Hassan

Hassan, Dec 24 (IANS): A five-year-old boy died due to delay in the arrival of an ambulance after he was bitten by a snake in this district, sources said on Saturday.

The deceased boy has been identified as Rohan, a resident of Doddakalluru village near Sakleshpur taluk. The family members and the villagers have slammed the authorities for the late arrival of the ambulance causing a delay which resulted in the death.

According to police, Rohan was bitten by a snake on the premises of Anganwadi (government preschool). His father rushed him to nearby Hettur government hospital on his bike, where the doctors referred him to Sakleshpur town hospital and asked him to wait for the ambulance.

While waiting for the ambulance, the boy had lost consciousness. The parents had arranged a car and attempted to transport the boy to taluk hospital in Sakleshpur.

The ambulance had come in the midway and the boy was shifted to the vehicle from the car. After reaching Sakleshpur taluk hospital, the parents were asked to take the boy to the district hospital in Hassan.

In spite of the treatment, the boy succumbed at the hospital.

Irate villagers blamed the non-availability of ambulance service for the death.

An investigation onto the case is on.

The snake in the picture looks like a Banded Krait it delivers neurotoxins (like the cobra) that can prove fatal in 30 mins.

Dont know how to express my sadness over this issue.A poor boy died due to pure negligence of Medcial care ,giving timely antivenum serum etc.Suppose a MLA or rich person then would certianly try somehow to survive the person or inject. How can in forest areas or India no antivenum sera not there ?Close all these hospitals and send all medical officers home or dismiss.RIP boy.May God take you upon his side and give peace to his soul Heartfelt sympathy to the family. Now someone will come with some money as compansation. If so throw it on their face or feet and ask them to give back their son.

Sakleshpur is a place with abundance of nature surrounded by hills, forests and valleys. It lies in the Malnad region on the magnificent hills. In such areas, the snakes live in abundance. It is a shame that the Hettur govt hospital and Sakleshpur town hospital did not have Antivenom injection. The heads of both hospitals should be suspended. In Kinnigoli, Concetta hospital always has this injection and so many people with snake bite were saved and most of the people came in the midnight. I fully blame doctors in these Sakleshpur hospitals, shame on them. They are butchers of humans.

The responsible doctors from these hospitals should be sued and stripped of their degrees for such grave negligence in which an innocent young boy lost his life for no mistake of his!!

Jossey, ambulances are for everyone. Only problem for public is, when in emergency, either petrol is not there in the vehicle or the driver of the vehicle has gone for a drink. I heard the ambulance for the cow is quickly available in Karnataka.

Ground realities are very very pathetic; the other day a young boy died of rabies as the doctors at the government health center didn't care to give him a antirabies shot, sent him after first aid, despite he being bit by a stray dog!

Government should make it mandatory to keep polyvalent antivenom injections in all rural primary health care centers as the chances of snakebites are very high due to the coverage with forests and the window period is very small unlike rabies! A precious life is lost due to somebody's negligence!! RIP!

This is krait.....very venomous...neuro toxic venom....When bites unable to make out....bites are less painful. Konkani its called as "ಕಾಂಡೆರ್".....Now this season, they come out mostly after sunset. Proper cleanliness must be maintained around the houses and without torch not to go outside for anything. Snakes dont drink milk....They run also fast. Really sad. Om shanthi....

Really heart braking news. At primary health center no first aid of any kind? No antivenom shots? Antivenom shots shall be available at ruler area primary health center. Even taluk hospital too failed to treat? or all medical personal escape from responsibility? My sympathies goes to the family members who lost their child. May his Soul Rest in eternal peace. Millions spend for security of useless politicians but they can't preserve life saving medicine at primary health centers.
