Mangaluru: CCI, Nitte bring smiles to 18,000 people after cleft lip surgeries in 22 yrs

Mangaluru, Dec 30: “Nitte organisation and CCI have performed 18,000 cleft lip surgeries of children and made them live with confidence in front of the society,” said Germany’s Professor Herman F Saler, founder president of Cleft Children International (CCI).

He was speaking at a grand programme held on the occasion of 22nd successful anniversary of Nitte Meenakshi Institute of Craniofacial surgery.

MLA U T Khader, who was the chief guest said the locals are grateful to Herman and Nitte organisation for enabling those with cleft lips to smile after conducting surgeries. “Dr Vikram Shetty who performed 18,000 cleft lip surgeries during the last 22 years with support from the hospital administration is a role model for the society,” he said.

N Vinay Hegde, chancellor of Nitte deemed to be university said that craniofacial surgeries are one of the noble works performed by the organisation for society. “Nitte organisation is grateful to Herman couple for having provided a platform for the work,” he said.

Social worker Umesh Pochappan who has conducted free health camps in Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Karnataka and has provided free medical aid to children of the poor was felicitated. A young man and a young girl who had undergone successful cleft lip surgeries were congratulated.

Dr Sathish Kumar Bhandary, vice-chancellor of Nitte, deemed to be university, was present. Chief organiser of the programme, Dr Vikram Shetty welcomed, compered the programme and rendered the vote of thanks.

CCI founder Herman Saler distributed $11,000 to the children suffering from cleft lip. Dr Vikram Shetty said two MLAs contacted the hospital doctors and offered to provide surgical instruments with the donations received from people.

The organisation that gave a job to cleft lip affected person:

Ranga had undergone cleft lip surgery at a young age in the hospital. As he was hesitating due to lack of confidence, Nitte Physiotherapy College principal Danesh Kumar provided him with a job in his department and Ranga has already completed 20 years of service in it. The principal and Ranga were congratulated on the occasion.
