Mangaluru: New Year shock for consumers - Mescom proposes hike of Rs 1.38 per unit

Daijiworld Media Network – Mangaluru (MS)

Mangaluru, Jan 3: The Mescom has given electricity tariff increase shock to its consumers at the beginning of New Year itself. It has made a proposal ready to increase the unit price by Rs 1.38 for the year 2023-24.

The Mescom has already sent the proposal to Karnataka Electricity Regulatory Commission (KERC). Any objections to the same can be sent to KERC or Mescom central office in the city.

According to the Mescom, for every unit, it is spending Rs 9.93. It is charging Rs 7.95 per unit to consumers at present. This means there is shortfall of Rs 1.38. So the price rise is inevitable according to Mescom.

In city areas L T-2 connection are charged at present at Rs 100 per KW. The Mescom has proposed to increase this to Rs 150. For additional KW, Rs 110 will be charged for 50 KW (present charge is Rs 100) and beyond 50 KW additional the charges will be Rs 175 (Rs 160 is current charges).

In the meantime, electricity adjustment fee is reduced by Rs 15 paisa for limited period. This is because KERC has noticed that there is overall reduction in the fuel and electricity buying expenses for the second trimester of 2022 (July to September). Earlier, it was said that Rs 37 will be refunded for every unit.

BJP must remember that your expectations of bagging 150 seats in Assembly elections are shattered, and you may get only 15 seats if price increase is not squashed.

This is ridiculous. Why dont you propose double the price for corporate and public sector companies, as they easily get huge subsidy from the government. Such companies should shell out more for consuming and wasting electricity. Also, if this is the trend, then it is a waste of vehicle companies selling Electric vehicles as I am sure in future we will all pay double the petrol/diesel price for charging our vehicles.

The problem is that major industries are reduced borrowing of power from MESCON as industries are now move towards cost affective way of producing renewable energies like solar, wind etc. Normally MESCOM is only distributing power and they are not producer of power. They will buy power from exchanges like IEX .Demand of power is less and MESCOM cannot bear their overhead charges like Transportation Loss ,salary etc. There will also be a backlog of payment and this will incur interest on payment. MESCOM don't have other choice but to increasing power now to poor consumer. The prices now introduced is in such a way that all the charges are averaged at higher rate and slabs are removed so that when next time if there is increase they will cash in more. MESCOM know public will cry and other than cry they cannot do nothing. In the end government will settle a medium price increase and make a eye wash to public who are blind anyway in the name of better tomorrow.
