Kundapur: People taken ill after eating shellfish imported from other states

Daijiworld Media Network – Kundapur (SS)

Kundapur, Jan 6: Fish lovers are now feeling tensed as people who are consuming shellfish that are arriving into the market are taken sick during the last few days.

Locals feel that shellfish that were made available earlier by fishermen through fishing in rivers did not cause such problems. People who consume shellfish arriving from other states are now facing health issues and the authorities have called for shellfish arriving from other states to be examined.

Shellfish is found in abundance in the Kundapur river beds of Hemmadi, Rajadi, Topplu, Hakkaladi, Aarate and Aanagalli. There is a huge demand for black and white shellfish made available from these rivers. However, in recent days due to silt in the rivers, the number of shellfish available from deep sea fishing has reduced drastically, according to fishermen.

Shellfish are healthy to consume and tasty as well. But, in the recent past shellfish are being imported from Kerala and those consuming shellfish cuisines are facing food poisoning.

Social worker Rajesh Kaveri feels that shellfish may be outdated and may have lost their flavour due to long storage. Besides, chemicals may have also affected the taste of shellfish. He said it is necessary to take suitable action in this regard.

Dr Nagesh, a physician at the Kundapur general hospital says there is a possibility of shellfish being kept in cold storage for months together after adding chemicals which could have affected those who consume the delicacies made of shellfish.

That is result when eating unprocessed food. All food should e labelled with a BATCH/LOT NUMBER , date of process. The problem is the 100% of market is unregulated in India, and we consider that we are advanced. But we use the same when we EXPORT the products . Why not enact the rule in our OWN INDIA too instead of these occurances repeating in the future and avoid tragedies.

Everyday we are getting new new typ of fishes arriving from end of this world.Previously used to get from fresh as possible.Today get fish with formalin smell and dead fish (Preserved for long time)in mangalore :Where it is costal area is .strange .When you choose to eat shell fish to eat, kindly put in fresh water and see if any open ones are there and throw immediately .Open ones are long dead and you will get stomach upset and diarrhea .First kindly just smell and see if it has sea salty freshness .If not simply throwaway .better to throw them than eating smelling formalin and get sick or more. When buying itself smell it if fresh or not.

Our highly acclaimed pollution control board should emergently send the suspected clams for chromatographic analysis and find out the exact cause of the poisoning instead of giving reports based on assumptions and presumptions so that the public is increased!

If it was some infective agent, it might have infected other crustaceans and some fish thriving near the entire shore! In all probability, some rogue factory has discharged chemical poisons into the sea, thanks to our ever vigilant pollution control board! Last time there was news of formalin being liberally applied to fish to prolong their freshness! Nowadays eating seafood is also fraught with chemical poisoning due to various poisonous effluents being released in the sea without any treatment!!

Paralytic Shellfish Poison (PSP) is a naturally occurring marine biotoxin that is produced by some species of microscopic algae. Shellfish eat these algae and can retain the toxin. People can become ill from eating shellfish contaminated with Paralytic Shellfish Poison. This biotoxin affects the nervous system and paralyzes muscles, thus the term "paralytic" is shellfish poison. High levels of Paralytic Shellfish Poison can cause severe illness and death. Bivalve molluscan shellfish such as clams, mussels, oysters, geoduck, and scallops can accumulate Paralytic Shellfish Poison. So can moon snails and other gastropods. Other marine species, such as sea cucumbers, might be affected. Crabs, because they feed on shellfish, can also become toxic. Even if the crab meat is safe, toxins tend to accumulate in the crab gut and butter (the white-yellow fat inside the back of the shell). Clean the crab thoroughly and avoid eating the crab butter and guts. What are the symptoms of Paralytic Shellfish Poisoning? Early symptoms include tingling of the lips and tongue, which may begin within minutes of eating toxic shellfish or may take an hour or two to develop. Symptoms may progress to tingling of fingers and toes and then loss of control of arms and legs, followed by difficulty in breathing. Some people feel nauseous or experience a sense of floating. If a person consumes enough toxin, muscles of the chest and abdomen become paralyzed, including muscles used for breathing, and the victim can suffocate. Death from Paralytic Shellfish Poison occurred in less than 30 minutes. Who is most at risk? Anyone who eats Paralytic Shellfish Poison contaminated shellfish is at risk for illness or death.
