Yeddyurappa, a Great Survivor, Completes Three Years in Office

Yeddyurappa, a Great Survivor, Completes Three Years in Office

Bangalore, May 29 (PTI): Battling challenges and threats of being toppled, Karnataka Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa, heading the first-ever BJP government in the south, is all set to complete three years in office tomorrow.

It has not been a smooth ride for Yeddyurappa who has managed to survive challenges to his leadership from within his own party twice as also threats from Governor H R Bhardwaj in the last three years.

In the last two years, he staved off efforts twice by BJP rebels to remove him from power, including by the powerful mining magnates of Bellary, the Reddy brothers, ministers Janardhana and Karunakara, and then by Bhardwaj, who had recommended imposition of President's rule in 2010 and this year.

But the Centre rejected the Governor's report on both occasions.

Besides, he had to tackle Opposition JDS and Congress, which had levelled allegations of corruption and nepotism against him and launched a series of protests.

But Bookanakere Siddalingappa Yediyurappa, who changed his name to Yeddyurappa adding an extra 'D' under the guidance of numerologists, has hung on to power.

Internal fissures and his own style of functioning brought Yeddyurappa to the edge of losing power when Tourism Minister G Janardhana Reddy led a political coup ferrying more than 40 BJP MLAs outside the state demanding change in leadership in October 2009.

As the political turmoil looked to touch a flashpoint, the BJP central leadership sought the intervention of Sushma Swaraj to mollify Reddy brothers and save its government.

Sushma, who has now sought to disown Reddy brothers, then played a key role in preventing Yeddyurappa from being ousted.

Yeddyurappa then faced another acid test when 11 rebel BJP MLAs and five independents supporting its government dashed off a letter to the Governor on October 6 last year, withdrawing support to the BJP government.

The Governor fixed October 12 as the deadline for Yeddyurappa to prove his majority but the 16 MLAs were disqualified by Speaker K G Bopaiah on October 10, giving a fresh lease of life to his government.

Yeddyurappa was forced to go in for the second trial of strength after Bhardwaj rejected the result of the first vote as "farce" and gave him another chance to prove his strength which the BJP accepted.

Bhardwaj had also recommended imposition of President's rule in Karnataka holding that the constitutional machinery had broken down. But Yeddyurappa won the vote of confidence and also got another fresh lease of life with the Centre rejecting Bhardwaj's report.

Yeddyurappa, who hails from one of the dominant Lingayat community-- was also able to make his community men and seers rally around him to ensure that BJP high command bowed to his dictates rather than acting against him when he faced a spate of corruption and nepotism charges.

Survival of the fittest is Darwin's thesis - a biological hypotheses. Survival of a survivor is a political hypotheses of Yeddyurappa's class. But the development of a State has gone for a six! Surely there is no recovery in the near future but only theatrics to fool the people!

Yedyurappa needs to be congratulated for one reason i.e., inspite vehement attach on him and conspiring to dismantle his government by Congress,JDS combine along with religious fanatics, anti natinals miserabily failed. There is no doubt that Yedyurappa will complete the full term and will be reelected in the next election witth thumping majority and his opponents eat the dust.

He may be corrupt to some extent but not to the extent of Raja,Kalmadi,Kannimol etc.,who are in jail but will not return the booty because CBI itself is in confusion not finding the modes operandi to know how the investments of loot were managed by the cculprits.Yedyurappa has returned the sites!!!

Roshan R, Mangalore like an astrologer how can you predict that Yeddy will not come to power after 2 years. Now people of our state are intelligent and no one can fool them and they know what is right and wrong. so they will vote as per their thinking.

    MOHINI, Mangalore: I have the
same question and I do agree with
    your comment 101%.

    The people of Karnataka elected
him to provide a good government
    with peace and smooth functioning.
    But, the administration advanced in
    the other direction however, the
CM was survived through all the
testing in water and fire. Indeed,
it was a great political survival story of the century.

Yeddy completing 3 years in office as CM is not great. What he did in 3 years is important. He was only running to Delhi 10 times a month with complaints to High Command and saving his Chair. He was going to Delhi to bribe the High Command and was saving his Chair and visiting Temples to beg pardon for the sins he committed in Looting the State. So there is nothing to be happy for Yeddy to feel happy or proud he completed 3 years. No development at all in 3 years and he has to start now after 3 years.

YEDDY IS THE GREAT SURVIVOR NO DOUBT. HE COMPLETED 3 YEARS IN OFFICE BUT DID NOTHING FOR THE STATE IN 3 YEARS BUT ONLY LOOTED THE SATE WITH VARIOUS SCAMS LIKE LAND SCAMS, ILLEGAL MINING AND VARIOUS OTHER SCAMS. SO THERE IS NOTHING TO BE HAPPY. HE WAS A DISASTER IN ALL 3 YEARS OF GOVERNANCE AND HEADACHE ALSO FOR ALL THE BJP CENTRAL LEADERS AND EVEN FOR THE UPA GOVERNMENT. CONGRESS AND JDS DID NOT LEVEL CHARGES AGAGINST HIM.

EVERYTHING WHAT YEDDY DID WAS FACTS AND IT WAS PROOVED ALSO. YEDDY SURVIVED TILL NOW ONLY DUE TO THE BLESSINGS OF BJP CENTRAL LEADERS. NO ACHIEVEMENT YEDDY DID IN 3 YEARS. FARMERS WERE SHOT WITHIN A WEEK OF HIS ASSUMING POWER AS CM, CHURCHES AND PRAYER HALLS WERE ATTACKED. THESE ARE THE ACHIEVEMENTS OF YEDDY IN 3 YEARS LOOTED KARNATAKA AND STILL LOOTING.
