Bantwal, May 29: In a tragic incident, two children of a poor family drowned in a pond at Vogga near here on Sunday May 29.
The deceased have been identified as seven-year-old Sharada and four-year-old Sharanya, both children of Jayendra and Sunita Rao who manage Vinayaka Canteen in Vogga.
The family has been residing in a rented house for the past one year at Vogga. But the canteen has been in the business for the past ten years.
On Sunday afternoon, Jayendra returned home to take rest and sent both his daughters to the canteen to have lunch. The children left home, while Jayendra took a nap.
Sunita waited for the daughters at the canteen, but when they did not come, she packed some food and returned home. However, she did not find her daughters at home either. The worried couple searched the neighbourhood and the locals also joined in. Finally, the neighbours found two pairs of footwear near the pond which gave rise to suspicions. They managed to retrieve the bodies.
Bantwal circle inspector Nanjunde Gowda, Bantwal rural sub inspector Mohammed Rafiq Tahsildar, town councillor Dinesh Bhandary, BUDA chairman Govind Prabhu, taluk panchayat member Vinay Nayak and others arrived at the spot.
The autopsy of the bodies was conducted at Government Hospital here.
Sharada was a student of class II in Nirkan Aided Primary School, while Sharanya was attending children’s nursery. Sharada was to attend the class on school reopening on Monday May 30.
