Mangalore: Monsoons Hit State in Full Fury

Mangalore, Jun 3: The monsoons have arrived, and in full force, across the state. Exactly four days after they made their presence felt in Kerala, the rains hit the state on Thursday June 2 with a heavy downpour in many parts of the state.

In Raichur and Bellary, rains began on Wednesday June 1, while the coastal districts of Udupi, Dakshina Kannada and Uttara Kannada experienced full-fledged rains on Thursday. It rained the heaviest in Bellary, recording 15 cm of rainfall.

Rains have also hit Kodagu, Shimoga and Bagalkot.

Many parts of the state were inundated due to improper drainage facilities, and there were reports of a couple of KSRTC buses getting stuck in muddy areas near Puttur due to poor road conditions.

With schools having already begun, children were seen rushing through the rains carrying umbrellas or decked in raincoats, and some without either.

Though the rains were not accompanied by thunder and lightning, heavy winds did cause some damage to property.

The Metereological department has issued a warning about heavy to very heavy rainfall in the next 48 hours. Fishermen have been told to keep off from venturing far into the sea. Control rooms are on alert and rescue teams have been put on standby to meet any emergency.

The monsoon season has begun three days in advance, much to the relief of farmers.
