Mangaluru: Girl student attempts suicide, dies after five days

Mangaluru, Feb 19: A PU girl student who attempted to kill herself, succumbed in the hospital on Sunday, February 19.

Dhanya (17), daughter of Somanatha and Bhavya couple of Tamil Nadu origin residing at Kumpala Ashraya Colony is the deceased.

Dhanya was studying second PU in Ramakrishna College of the city. On February 14, when mother Bhavya went home, her daughter Dhanya was not there. She returned home at 3 pm. When mother Bhavya enquired, Dhanya said that she had gone to her friend’s house for studying. Mother Bhavya scolded her for not informing the same to her over the phone and slapped her too.

Bhavya, mother of Dhanya went to work in a nearby house after the slapping incident. In the meantime, Dhanya consumed pesticide inside the house that was kept to destroy pests. She was admitted to hospital on February 14 and died on the morning of February 19.

Somanath, father of deceased Dhanya works as a mason and mother Bhavya works in a pickle manufacturing factory and as a part-time maid in the evening. Their younger son Bhuvan studies in high school.

    It's not fair for children to treat their parents this way. We can understand the mother's fear when the child is not informed and left the house. But kind request to all parents DON'T hit your kids over 13yrs. I may not end well. Rest in Peace to the soul of the departed and condolences to the family.
