Udupi, Mar 2: The directorate of civic administration has approved a Rs. 24.25 crore project to replace old street lights in the city municipality limits with energy-efficient smart LED lights under the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model.
Udupi's name was not included in the project's Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the state, so a separate DPR of Rs. 24.25 crore was submitted to the director of civic administration in Bengaluru for approval. MLA Raghupati Bhat was instrumental in securing government approval for the project.
Over 20,000 LED lights will replace old tube lights, resulting in an 80% reduction in electricity bills and saving Rs. 1.20 crore annually in maintenance costs for the outdated lamps. Defective street lights can be identified remotely from the command centre office of the city municipality due to the advanced technology used in the new lighting system.
