Madhya Pradesh Govt Suspends Five Policemen

Bhopal, Jun 17 (IANS): Madhya Pradesh has suspended five policemen, moving swiftly after a Bhopal court hauled up an entire police station for allegedly fabricating evidence in a custodial injury case.

"The government has taken the matter very seriously and suspended all the five policemen who were on duty that day. Deputy inspector general, Bhopal, K.K. Lohani, will inquire and submit a report on the issue to the government," Home Minister Uma Shankar Gupta told reporters Friday.

"Police have also been ordered to cooperate with the court and provide all the information the court seeks in the case."

The case relates to a man named Bhura alias Mubarik, a rape accused, who claimed he was stabbed by another person in the Berasia police lockup but cops tried to pass off his wounds as self-inflicted, said officials.

Mubarik said he was stabbed by the alleged rape victim's cousin, Piplesh, at the police station May 5 in the presence of police officials. The doctor who treated him also said he was actually stabbed with a knife or some other sharp weapon as the wound was deep. But Berasia police said Mubarik injured himself in the lockup.

The court of Judge Ganga Charan Dubey registered a case against the entire police station for fabricating evidence.

The suspended policemen are sub-inspector S.H. Dhurve, head constable Banwari Lal and constables Pradeep Dixit, Harishankar and Tikaram.
